I wrote a blog post breaking down the moral and technical failings of Cloudflare's recent Matrix project and why I am disappointed in the Matrix.org Foundation for supporting it: https://nexy.blog/2026/01/28/cf-matrix-workers/

No, Cloudflare's Matrix server isn't an earnest project - Nex's Blog

I ran out of characters for microblogging so this is where the big words go

@nex Thanks for writing this. It included quite a few details that I'd missed initially.

As for the Matrix.org blogpost - I'm disappointed, but I can't say I'm surprised. The Foundation has had several opportunities over the years to choose between "high-capital centralized development" and "low-capital community-engaged development", and they've consistently chosen the former despite all the evidence suggesting that it'll never be sustainable. This choice unfortunately seems in line with that.
