Predictably, this film is also drawing negative reviews from people who would really prefer not to have the "AI" narrative challenged. It's informative (and entertaining) to see what the criticisms from such quarters are.

One review is headlined "‘Ghost in the Machine’ is Already Behind the Times" ... which is particularly hilarious because the film does an amazing job of tracing the historical roots of today's "AI" ideology.

Not just back to the 1956 Dartmouth workshop (and excellent historical footage of McCarthy and Shannon) but also to the connections between the founding of statistics and eugenics.

The film is of this moment because it situates the narrative being pushed by the AI bros in its both its historical (see upthread) and present context -- the latter being coverage of environmental damage and the exploitative labor practices behind "AI".

The people who complain that it is "out of date" because it doesn't speak to this week's buzzwords or this week's specific hype are frantically trying to stay within the narrative that the tech companies want to restrict us to.
@emilymbender Thank you for keeping us up to date on this debate!

"A must-watch as soon as you get the chance."

ok. Sooo....Sundance? A "special experience" indeed!

But sadly, as a member of the 'great unwashed' i'm afraid i'll have to content myself with slightly more errr.... accessible anti-AI media. Thankfully there is a plentiful supply.

I am glad, tho, that the intelligentsia and red-carpet crowd got a tasty anti-AI snack to munch on. As well as a chance to contribute to the gdp of the hellscape that calls itself the state of Utah.

@kitkat_blue You know how movies that *premiere* on film festivals occasionally become available to the rest of us shortly after, right? I bet that is going to happen to this one, too.

i'm familiar. They typ go on a short tour of a handful of theaters/auditoriums the summer/fall of the year they release-- if there is enough interest. they may get picked up by a streaming service, but rarely. There may be a disc release many months later.

All of that is long after the initial hype is over.

It should go straight to stream-where it might actually be watched. But the hope for "deals" means it won't and so it will likely go glimmering into obscurity.
