Hey you!

Do you have data? Is it backed up? Are your backups working? Have you tested them? And that better way of testing them?

Also take batteries out of your stored devices. Yes even lithium ones.

And have you followed up that weird feeling/sound/movement your body is doing lately?

@NanoRaptor stop calling me out like that!

I'm like pretty sure my backups are OK and testing it would be a lot of work ๐Ÿ˜‚

@NanoRaptor so a thing happened. Based on your toot I went through and disconnected the batteries in old computers and stuff. During that process I found my old iPad with THE SPICIEST PILLOW inside. Screen fully detached. Thanks for the heads up ๐Ÿ˜š
@bno woohoo! RIP the battery but hey - self-opening to put the next battery in!

@NanoRaptor Yes, No, No, What?, No.

Why?

@NanoRaptor Yes, yes, yes, yes, no.

OK, I am pretty sure I have, but I will check.

No, I probably should. It's a bit achy.

@NanoRaptor I don't really bother with backups. Most things I have on my computer are just things I've downloaded. (I don't really have an empty external drive, the ones I have are full, and I don't have the money to buy another one either.)

@NanoRaptor Iโ€™m going for an ultrasound tomorrow.

Re: the backups? Yes, no, no, no and no.

@Salvo good luck in whatever form that may take!

@NanoRaptor Yes, Yes, Yes but need more, not that I know of.

Oh a PSP.

No. :(

@NanoRaptor

"It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your backup tapes are?"

@NanoRaptor Nope. I like to live dangerously. But not, like, physical danger. I'm not going bungie jumping.

@NanoRaptor
Kids are, in a sense, a way of backing up the data that constitutes a person.

Lossy steganography?

@NanoRaptor my federal agricultural data that I need to finish my masters thesis but the usda has decided is not important data to keep in their records anymore? Yeah, that database is safe. Canโ€™t say for sure about the rest of my work though lol.
@NanoRaptor Thanks for the reminder, I just realized that the couple of HP RPN calculators I have in a desk drawer and haven't used for years are stored devices, not currently in use. Batteries now removed.
@NanoRaptor Yes, some of it, no idea, I should, what?, I should and I should ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@NanoRaptor Please tell me you're not looking over my shoulder as I clean up after one of my servers went bang and destabilised the Ceph cluster my backups are on.
@NanoRaptor Nope. Not taking out the battery from my phone again. Last time I did that it got pregnant.

@NanoRaptor
Lol, no to most of those.

Backups are golden though ๐Ÿ‘

@NanoRaptor good reminder, after having my computer's filesystem corrupted (and barely salvaged) and having to reset my phone

@NanoRaptor

Do you have data? Is it backed up? Are your backups working?

I would add, do you have a live working operating system that works on pretty much any X64 computer.

windoze with its constant flow of failed updates is a major risk factor.

antiX or MX linux run perfectly from a decent USB stick and allow access to all non encrypted data.

Remember if you encrypt everything, loss of key or in many cases hardware fails mean 100% data loss.

@NanoRaptor just pulled the 6v battery out of my old 35mm camera last night.

...i really do need to set up a backup system, though. i've got a little synology nas that's been sitting in its box for *checks notes* 4 or 5 years now(!?), i just need to actually set it up

@NanoRaptor I certainly followed up on the weird sound my backup drive was making a little while ago by copying all the important data off it. Thereโ€™s still a bit left on there, but I need to buy a bigger drive, and I wouldnโ€™t be too annoyed if it disappeared, anyway.

@NanoRaptor

I once found an old laptop battery 20 years in storage. It had 80% charge left...

@NanoRaptor nope a mouse ate the ethernet cable to the upstairs so my NAS is offline. I'm getting a shielded patch cable, presumably mouse-proof, to go under the door through the mouse highway space

@NanoRaptor Yes, most of it, yes, most of most of it, idk what that means

been planning to do that on my old laptops when i have more free time, but i dont think im physically capable of taking the batteries from my old phones with non-removable batteries :( it should be safe if they are completely empty and i dont connect them to a charger, right?

@NanoRaptor oh I see and I will love to be friends with you if you don't mind please follow me back

@NanoRaptor

This sounds like every conversation I have when I start a new job

@NanoRaptor

โ€œAlso take batteries out of your stored devices. Yes even lithium ones.โ€

Me: Looks at the big assed* lithium battery in my office that I took out of my camper before putting it in storage

*400 Amp hours, 5.2 kwh

@NanoRaptor hihi, I am not that good with backups...
The most backup-ish thing I do, is synchronize Stuff I work on using Syncthing ๐Ÿค”
@NanoRaptor I downgraded my Mac from Tahoe to Sequoia yesterday. All my backups worked perfectly. It was a total no-stress situation (and I like the older MacOS soooo much better than the new one).
@NanoRaptor Slowly working through the body stuff, it's a bit of a list Dx
@NanoRaptor uh oh grafana hasn't been nagging me about missing backups so they are at least running daily, I haven't checked if I forgot to add something to the backup scripts in a while, I haven't checked what's inside the backups in a while, I still haven't figured out off-site backups or automatic backup trimming
@NanoRaptor and I still have a single point of failure when it comes to where the backups are IIRC

I really should fix this after my holiday
