for me the line was already crossed with the WorldCup in Katar.
I've completely stopped watching any of it since then and I don't miss it one bit.
But this year FIFA should be shown an actual and real dropoff in viewership, traffic and mentions.
Here's hoping.
I agree that the public stations should not be buying the rights to those tournaments.
I'm afraid though that that would (unfortunately and wrongly so!) lead to even less acceptance of what publicly funded media means for an open society.
It's a terrible conundrum.
Thank you for making this connection. I had missed it.
I agree 100%. And FIFA has been absolutely horrific for decades. They've needed to be boycotted since the turn of the century.
So, hell yes, boycott FIFA and the Olympics. We in the US should be thinking of ways to disrupt both events in real time on the ground. Block traffic, use airhorns to disrupt the events, prevent teams from arriving on time, whatever can be done.
Sorry for the participants, they don't deserve this. But these are extraordinary times.
@jwildeboer Unfortunately there will be enough idiots spending time in the stadiums. Most of them will say „sport should not be interfered with by politics“ or just „Oh, I don’t care about politics!“ (which I call the „Russian excuse“ because every Russian will answer any question about politics with it)
FIFA WC is a planned distraction like „panem et circenses“.
@jwildeboer And they have a convenient list if sponsors, who are cvollaborating with this:

Sad to see Hyundai and Lenovo on the list...
