I type really fast. Too fast for eSpeakup apparently, because I was installing Debian 13 in VMWare Workstation 25H2 just now, got to the part where I enter my full name for my user account, started quickly typing my name, got as far as typing "Stu H" before eSpeakup just fell over and died. No problem, I'll restart the VM and try again. The exact same thing happened at the exact same point in setup. This is the state of Linux accessibility in 2026.
@cubic Speech dying in Linux when using Vmware has been an issue from time to time for years. If you are on an m chip based mac the first micro second of each read out is chopped off.
@khronos Usually that's the audio. But it wasn't the audio this time, it was the actual eSpeakup process shitting out.
@cubic I didn't even need to type fast. I tried to review the screen and it died.
@tspivey @cubic Same here, and this was happening even all the way back in Debian 10
@cubic This happens to me all the time that I've just given up on installing Linux from the console these days. Espeakup is just terrible now and needs global replacement with Fenrir
@draeand Does D13 have a GUI installer?
@cubic Not an accessible one I don't think? I haven't used Debian in ages
@cubic I ended up getting a Mini PC to mess with Linux on, Fedora using Mate Desktop is a good, Accessible choice, because the only Distro that I didn't have sound stuttering issues with in a Workstation VM was Vinux, which is old and has no package manager.
