I agree that Back to the Future II is a great analogy of our time.
I also think The Lathe of Heaven is an appropriate example.
The film apparently at least recognised Memphis Milano as something without staying power. It's generally hard to see what you're surrounded by, but BttF2 succeeded.
(It's easy to think future is MORE or LESS like present*, and a lot harder to think it to be just DIFFERENT**.)
