My latest project was turning my old Windows 10 machine upstairs into a #SelfHosting workstation. I slapped a big hard drive in it, and reformatted with #Kubuntu #Linux.

I've converted many of my DVD collection into a @jellyfin server. (Only stuff I OWN + public domain content, and only viewable inside the house.) I also just put on #NextCoud and it was pretty easy. Now I essentially have cloud storage from anyplace.

It's amazing! And... it just works. Why didn't I do this before???

I want to thank a few people for inspiration: @_elena, @dragondaddy, @thekitmalone, and a few others I'm sure.

This opened up a world of possibilities for me. Also, I know there will be a lot of perfectly good "old" 5-year-old computers going to salvage because of the Windows decommissioning of v10.

Each step was definitely a "weekend project" but each step also adds amazing functionality. So worth it.

If you're thinking of taking the plunge, ask me anything. I'd be happy to help!

@ScottStarkey @_elena @dragondaddy This is rad! Everytime someone starts hosting their own services an angel gets their wings!
@ScottStarkey @jellyfin Self-hosting is awesome! I personally enjoy every moment of it (even if it's not working as expected haha)!
@ScottStarkey @jellyfin now use tailscale to to easily access your cloud and tools from anywhere
@ScottStarkey @jellyfin Jellyfin is nothing less than a triumph. I used a decade-old Asus CN60 Chromebox and it works great for streaming all my TV show collections without juggling DVDs. All the convenience of streaming plus the autonomy of ownership.
