Tell DuckDuckGo where you stand on AI.

AI should be a choice. Here’s where you stand.

@clacksee Now… if only they were from somewhere else 😥

That’s what prevents me from using it.

@EdwinG @clacksee There ought to be some kind of alliance where people can find local alternatives in comparatively benevolent states and comparatively benevolent state alternatives in hostile states.
@EdwinG
Qwant and Ecosia are both based in the EU. And both privacy focused. Ecosia is all in on AI, though.

@clacksee I use Ecosia :-)

My browser doesn’t support setting alternate search engines as a default 😥
I really wish they changed that!

@EdwinG @clacksee perhaps time to shift browser. Feels like @Vivaldi would be up your street.
@EdwinG @clacksee what browser is that?
Edwin G. :mapleleafroundel: (@[email protected])

@[email protected] One of the rare non-Blink/Chrome ones: Safari

@EdwinG @clacksee if it is iOS Safari then you can and I am quite sure OS X one does have also the functionality. Settings -> Applications -> Safari
@janantos @EdwinG
OSX Safari definitely allows alternative search engines. iOS Safari, though, only allows you to choose between five possibilities.

@clacksee That’s why I use Ecosia. It’s the only non-USA one listed on Safari on macOS, iOS and iPadOS.

@janantos

@EdwinG
I use Ecosia with Safari
@EdwinG what browser are you using?
@fluidlogic One of the rare non-Blink/Chrome ones: Safari

@EdwinG ah yes, the Internet Explorer 6 of the 2020s, I've heard it called!

Are you also on an older version of OS X?

@fluidlogic The current version.

We need variety. And there are only three browser engines that I know: Google (Blink), Mozilla (Gecko) and Apple (WebKit).

Most run on Blink, like Brave, Edge, Chrome, Vivaldi…

@EdwinG there's also Servo (now independent of Mozilla, still in alpha) and Ladybird (but the project is a Nazi bar).

@fluidlogic It’s the first time I hear of them… and they seem not advanced enough for daily use 😥

And Ladybird is a USA organization

@EdwinG yes. I don't know where the majority of Servo devs reside; I assume they're also based in the US.

To be clear, even if the Ladybird team were based in Europe, I wouldn't adopt their software, because of their politics.

It's a sad situation that we even have to make such considerations about the software we use.

@clacksee @EdwinG wow, that needs @ecosia a Domain (or search parameter) without AI: https://noai.duckduckgo.com/

Current No-AI is really clear (with 93%) but it is with just 25.000 Voters not representiv:

@clacksee
I started using DuckDuckGo search instead of google, but every time I search there is an AI option even though I click "never" in settings every time. I'm using kagi a lot more now. Their AI option stays turned off.
@tanquist @clacksee A quick shortcut is noai.duckduckgo.com. It saves turning the slop off. I need to add it as a custom search into LibreWolf and Vivaldi.
@clacksee May I ask how you found this? I don't see anything about it on ddg's blog.
@admin
Someone posted it on BlueSky.
@clacksee Someone shared it on reddit too but again not official account and no source. https://duckduckgo.com/vote/ on the other hand does seem official given the domain, and the results appear to be about the same, so it's probably fine.
Are you YES AI or NO AI? Vote now.

Big Tech doesn't care if you want AI or not. They should.

@admin

Numbers seem to match across the two pages. I suspect it’s actually the same on the back end.

@admin @clacksee When you click "Share Now" on https://duckduckgo.com/vote/results, it gives you the link https://VoteYesOrNoAI.com/

@clacksee I don't mind AI as long as it is turned off by default and the user has to actively choose to use it. But if I get it shoved into my face the red mist comes down.

@clacksee the server is down for me
@clacksee The 'It's Optional' is the reason I stopped using it. I switched to #Ecosia not long ago, but that got AI Slop added. #Qwant it is now.

@clacksee
Another binary-stupid vote

How about: “I want to see well-designed resource-optimized AI (machine learning) that doesn't get in the way and actively cuts down on the slop”?
But NO, only total hate and total love on the menu, of course!

This was a post about internet communication at large.

@clacksee

I hope they'll consider changing the default to "no AI". I find it infuriating that synthetic text gets in my way when I accidentally hit the default ddg page (without noai.) now ...

@clacksee black or white is not good. I love Duckduckgo and I love AI.
@clacksee i am NO JS, so that page is solid orange for me.
