i need y'all to understand that the moderate who tells you that you can't protect marginalized people from fascists because it'll paint progressives as dangerous criminals is just as vital a component of fascism as the goon actively rounding up those marginalized people.

fascism's true believers are *very* few in number. the bulk of fascism's power comes from treacherous moderates who will tell you that, yes, fascism is bad - but resistance is worse.

@fuckfetish Nazi fascism was only possible because a large amount of the population supported it. Deluding yourself into thinking that fascism is inherently fringe is a good way to end up with it winning.

@EinsPossum Sure, a fair amount of the population might own MAGA hats or think Hitler's a very good speaker or whatever the fuck else, but how many of those people are actually willing to *enact* fascism? There's a reason that right wingers put so much time and money into obfuscating their cruelty. Only a very small portion of the population actually knows fascism's true face and supports it. The rest are in denial to some extent or another.

@EinsPossum Even now, with Renee Good, the Trump administration is trying to claim that she was the aggressor. Why? Because even the staunchest of conservatives don't like the idea of masked boogeymen running around shooting white women.

Hell, the entire alt-right media ecosystem exists solely to deceive conservatives as to what exactly it is that they're supporting.

@fuckfetish i think its a mistake to believe that people supporting fascism but deluding themselves about it will change their mind upon receiving new information about fascisms cruelty. They support fascism for reasons, and the self-delusion only serves the purpose of mollifying dissonances in identity until societal climate allows for open fascism.

@EinsPossum I don't know that they'll change their minds, but they certainly won't be rushing to sign up to be concentration camp guards. Fascism does not need the average person to hold the gun - it just needs them to look away.

But that's the entire point of the original post, which I think you may have missed; you do not need to be a true believer in fascism to be an agent of fascism, as is the case with """"moderates"".

@EinsPossum We literally had nationwide protests against ICE and police brutality and moderates ran a senile segregationist who gave us four years of record killings by police, refused to prosecute Trump, and armed the genocide in Palestine.

@fuckfetish you are wrong about this, at least if talking about Nazi Germany, your narrative is ahistorical. A large amount of Germans did actively support national-socialism. The persecution of jews at the scale that happened wouldnt have been logistically possible without active supporters everywhere.
