Follow + Hide Boosts is seriously one of the best low-key features of Mastodon. I use it all the time. It's wonderful.

So if you follow me or want to follow me but really don't want to see my boosts because I boost a lot? PLEASE USE IT I WILL NOT BE OFFENDED IT IS A GOOD FEATURE. IT IS SO GOOD.

Here's Space Catitude talking about it:

Basically "hide boosts from" is wonderful.

(Y'know what else is? Time-limited mutes. Goddamn I love that so much. I use it, too.)

Attached: 1 image I'm seeing a lot of concern over heavy news today and boosts. So I want to call your attention to a useful, but perhaps little-known Mastodon feature: If you want to follow an account on Mastodon, but you don't like the posts that they boost from others, you can hide these from an option on their profile (in the web UI) without having to unfollow them. There are many strongly held opinions on the "correct" use of CW and what ought to be boosted, so this can be a useful way to cope.

I mean a lot of people follow me _because_ I boost like a mofo, I do what it says on the tin, BUT IF THAT'S NOT YOU WANT YOU DON'T HAVE TO SEE IT and that's fucking _great_.
and time-limited mutes? fuck that's good. purest "jesus fuck I cannot deal with your bullshit right now" in luxury automated timer format. mute somebody for a day, for a week, however long it takes until they flip back from asshole to funny again. love that shit.
@moira i was quite sad moving to my current android client when i realized it doesn't have time limited mutes
@depereo so rude! hopefully it'll get them.
@depereo @moira I think this is part of the reason why Tusky is still the most popular, it doesv almost all the things.
@moira @catsalad Yuuuup. Best feature evar.
@moira @Tattooed_Mummy tbh I would prefer even more, a "hide this user's boosts of their own toots". I don't mind people showing me things but I don't need them to re-show me themselves fifty times a day. I have a chronological timeline here that I generally read all of. (How else would I complete the Internet?)

@interpipes This "re-showing" helps me to think one more time if i REALLY have to boost sth XD Really, just bc i'm SO glad to have found sth it might still not help SO many others and those who are interested in the topic might already have seen it via following the hashtag in it or other sources.

@Magda_93d I mean, sometimes there are good reasons to boost your own posts. Occasionally.

But some people boost everything they have posted, several times a day, a lesson I suspect they have learned from the algorithms of other social medias and/or they have a lot of followers who skip most of their timeline backlog.

@interpipes

@FediTips
once informed me that if you want people to read a reply, _beyond those who follow both of you_ you need to boost it.

So that's why I boost my replies if they scope beyond the thread

@Magda_93d

@wavesculptor @FediTips @Magda_93d sure, that is one of the reasons to boost - replies would only be 'notified to' mentioned parties and in the timeline of mutual follows. Fairly sure this was the same on twitter. Those replies would still visible to an unrelated 3rd party if they click in view the replies.

What I'm talking about is people who make regular posts, not replies, and then boost them a few times a day presumably doing so "just to make sure everyone saw it".

@interpipes

so we ⬆️ have similar small numbers of followers/following; I also have shedloads of hide-it-completely filters. how does someone following 10k accts, or with 10k followers get more than a fraction of the way thru their timeline? I regularly edit mine for this reason and do as Magda ⬇️ says. But you can see how some want to rattle their cages at the cost of rattling their peers.

[edit -- then there's also the timezone thing that multiplies with the flooded timeline thing. I'll be off soon, it's 22:30 local and UTC]

@Magda_93d

@wavesculptor @interpipes @Magda_93d

Just to be clear, this is only if you want people to notice that particular reply in their "Home" timeline and they aren't following both of you.

Your replies will be visible to others if they are browsing the discussion thread even if they're not boosted..

@interpipes @Tattooed_Mummy Gods, I haven't completed the internet since Usenet days.
