I am almost to the last episode of the current season of Foundation. It’s really good - I read the books 40 years ago so I’m a bit fuzzy but the show seems to be at least as good. I am expecting to see Hari Seldon action figures soon, with prime radiant and Vault accessories.
@jerry I love the series. Really good. I won’t spoil it for you. 😉
@jerry I am behind. haven't started on current season yet. but when series first aired, pulled out my foundation and robots series books and caught up on them.

@jerry
yep.
I was a bit put out when I started S01. I always thought it would have been better as a radio play where chronological jumps and cast changes would have been easier. And while I love Jared Harris, this whole "Hari Seldon keep interfering with things while claiming not possible" drives me nuts.

But coming at it as its own thing, they're being honest with the spirit and its not bad. And objectively, the 3 clone thing was a reasonable way to keep the same antagonist across 400 yrs.

@jerry
I re-read them very recently. While there is nearly no similarities plot wise, it takes the fundamentals and revisits the themes from the books. I enjoyed the show more than the books, from and entertainment point of view. I felt the book's content was more grounded in some ways, more personally relatable.
@jerry the writers of the show did a great job to adapt the books for a current audience / time.
@falkheiland @jerry seriously? The writers adding a Death Star to the storyline impressed you? Such an original concept for a space drama.
@rjmd @jerry first of, I did not mention being impressed or "death star" - so no strawmen please.
I was going for the fact, that those books are written over 60ish years ago. technology and social constructs changed in such a enormous way since then that you have to rewrite a lot of things so a show can be successful today.
@jerry surely this is sarcastic. It’s the worst adaption of a novel I’ve ever seen. Every change they’ve made has undermined Asimov’s universe and overarching storyline. What I don’t understand is why they changed so many things. The flow of everything is worse and harder to follow. The excessive adaptions has butchered the original story and you can tell they are desperately making more changes to try fix it and bring it back on track. If anything, this season was the nail in the coffin of the writers completely disregarding Asimov’s work.
@jerry
I watched the first season and absolutely hated their maltreatment of the books. I guess if you don't know the original it's fine though.

@jerry It's a weird case where both the book and the series are good, but the series would be better received if it wasn't attached to the book 🤔

Part of the issue is that a tv serial needs main characters whose actions matter, while the books (Versions of Hari notwithstanding) tried to stick with the psychohistory concept of individuals not having a significant impact on the larger events.

@jerry OH.... It gets wild in the third season. Stupendous show.
