To whoever was stealing very expensive audio gear from #39c3, fuck you. Completely against the spirit of the event to steal something from the community like that.
@Violet It's a shame the CCTV at the event doesnt work, it kinda means cunts can get away with it...
@thechaoszone AFAIK a lot of places in Germany in general don't have CCTV. Would've helped a lot when my backpack was stolen earlier in the year.
@Violet @thechaoszone I hope they keep it that way. Surveillance goes even more against the community spirit than stolen things.
@eloy @Violet I'm not sure you'd be saying that if you had £££££ of audio gear stolen?
@thechaoszone @eloy some people have the ability to see a bigger picture even when they've been personally hurt.
@vurpo @eloy
That reeks of Privilege, lots of artists myself included do not have tech salaries to back them up, in the same way as other attendies might.
@thechaoszone @eloy @Violet I had my luggage stolen whilst taking the train (2023) with contents with similar financial cost to the denon dj in question, and more emotional value for sure. There was CCTV and even IP logs (they plugged in my chromecast and watched my netflix, I got them the IPs), german police did nothing. So more surveillance is no guarantee of that data being used for good when necessary.
@ave @thechaoszone @eloy similar story here but less technical, when my backpack was stolen earlier this year I had a full log of all of the stores my payment card had been used with location information. Reported it to the police and I haven't heard back from them.
@eloy @thechaoszone there's no way to do it right without it being abused, the best solution as far as I know is being down to the person who had their things stolen, attaching a tracking tag to their expensive possessions for example.
@Violet @eloy @thechaoszone
Maybe, but also there can be a right way to CCTV and that is simply not to share it and not to AI it, then I think it's fine especially at a large event with potential for crime
@eloy @Violet @thechaoszone in fact, it is intentionally disabled (except in the elevators for emergencies), and all those cameras are additionally physically covered during it as well.
It provides a certain kind of safe atmosphere/space and freedom, but this is a drawback, and it is disgusting and I would not have expected that this happened.
@crypticcelery @eloy @Violet @thechaoszone When 15,000+ people, even very cool people, come together, you just can’t rule out that there is a tiny percentage of assholes among them.
@Violet And this is why we can't have nice things!
@MMusselwhite @Violet But we can. And we just did. And we will again, 360 days from now.
@schlabonskii @Violet Please tell me I got the math wrong and it doesn't start on Christmas and/or Boxing Day? 😅 /genq
@MMusselwhite @Violet Sorry, I have been a little vague on the concept of “days” – my Congress experience began on December 9th and probably will end on January 8th.
@Violet Is it just my impression, or have there been *a lot* more thefts during C3 this year compared to earlier years? Like, an order of magnitude more..
