UNIX v4 (1973) - Live Terminal | Experience Vintage UNIX

UNIX v4 (1973) live in your browser. Original binaries recently recovered from archival sources once thought lost. PDP-11/45 emulator with Thompson shell and early C compiler.

UNIX v4 Interactive Terminal
@kielkontrovers Heh. What'd you do? 🀣
@atoponce idk using LibreWolf

@kielkontrovers @atoponce I suspect that this has to do with the privacy.resistFingerprinting.pbMode and privacy.resistFingerprinting settings in about:config that Librefox automatically sets. They cause issues sometimes with images that are created in the browser.

Edit: This is not a suggestion to adjust them. Just explaining what I suspect causes this issue.

@atoponce

This is so cool. I wasn't quite old enough to know about Unix at the time, but it is fascinating to see where it was at in 1973.

@atoponce that didn't take long...a week from tape read to running in a browser?

@atoponce

I don't want anything living in my bowser

@bitsavers I don't want a PDP 11 in my house. 😁

@atoponce @bitsavers
I do! My wife, on the other hand...

It works fine using Firefox on Android.

@atoponce well that was quick
@atoponce @robpike V4 had lower case? Or is this a concession to modern sensibilities?
@isonno @atoponce @robpike
UNIX always supported lower & upper case as distinguishable, and commands were almost all lower case. Here’s V1 man:

@JohnMashey @isonno @atoponce But not all the terminals did....
@robpike @isonno @atoponce
Yes, I recall seeing that when I got to BTL in 1973, and being grateful for having daisy-wheel terminals and not having to mess with uppercase-only TTYs.
@atoponce
Cool! V4 is what I was using October 1973.
@atoponce Note to self: don't use tee with a screen keyboard only.
