"Forest," Stanislaw Witkiewicz, 1892.

Witkiewicz (1851-1915) was a Polish painter, art theoretician, and architect. As an architect, he was famous for creating the Zakopane Style of building, based on traditional architecture of Poland's highland regions.

Born to a politically active Polish family in what is now Lithuania, in what was then ruled by the old Russian Empire, Stanislaw also spent some time in Siberia thanks to his parents' pro-democratic activities and involvement in the January Uprising, an insurrection against Poland's Russian rulers.

He was educated in St. Petersburg and Munich, became a writer on artistic subjects, set up a studio, and had a thriving career. He went to the town of Zakopane in Poland and fell in love with the scenery and buildings; there he painted this snowy scene.

Everything here is in remarkable detail, especially when you spot the sky and realize it's supposed to be night. I guess the moon is very full and bright tonight!
