Tuesday Tip - How to Fix a Hole In Your Knitting - Patty Lyons | Knitting Teacher

This is a real live story of how I helped my friend not stab herself (or others) . . . in other words, how to fix a hole in your knitting!

Patty Lyons | Knitting Teacher

@Gurggles

Ooh, I need this skill, thank you!

@Gurggles attempt at #alt4u :

Video showing a sped-up process of mending a hole in knitted fabric: a thin thread is first weaved over the hole, up and down, to then guide the weaving of the actual yarn from left to right. Once the hole is covered, they cut the first guide thread like removing stitches, and it ends up looking like there never was a hole.

@Gurggles nah, just craft ๐Ÿ’…
@Gurggles That requires a deep understanding of knitting!
@Gurggles What in the world did I just watch??????? Wow!
@Gurggles #alt4u

A high-speed video of darning.

The camera is fixed over a piece of knitting with a hole in. A needle is used to sew a fine thread in a series of tall stitches across the hole. Yarn matching the original is carefully sewn around this scaffold to recreate each missing knitted stitch in turn. Finally, the fine threads are cut and pulled out with tweezers. The hole is repaired so neatly it is impossible to see where it was.
@Gurggles I usually like to show my mends, but this is great.
@Gurggles There used to be a place in town that did "re-weaving" on garments and it was definitely witchcraft.

@Gurggles

Wow! That is incredible. I have a vintage sweater that has a few holes in it. Iโ€™d love for it to be repaired. One day soon, I hope.

@Gurggles so that's how you do it!
@Gurggles tellement satisfaisant
@Gurggles Where are the ends of the new yarn? They have to be anchored somwehere.
@Gurggles I believe thatโ€™s Alexandra Brinck on Instagram. She does amazing repairs.
@Gurggles This is what my mum used to do in the 70's before "buy-use-'re'-cycle" end-game-capitalistic consumer-hell started in the 80's. Source: Mother.
@Gurggles BECk-when, it was legio. Of course it's witchcraft today since it threatenes the private-equity profit surge.

@Gurggles

WHAT??? I need instructions.

@Gurggles And so, the thread becomes the needle.
@Gurggles I wanted to try to learn how to do this for a favorite sweater with a very similar hole, but I couldn't find yarn in a similar enough color. So I took a different approach (like the #VisibleMending @NatureMC mentioned).

@Gurggles

It's called darning and old ladies know how to do it, so it must be witchy! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@Gurggles Wow! ๐Ÿคฉ

Wow, @Gurggles ! I need to do this with an afghan my mother made for me (that has a hole in it)! Thank you for sharing your magic!
