160F! My hottest compost pile yet
compost is cured! a little chunky here and there but it smells really good
@selfsame When compost is done it smells amazing 😊

@selfsame
okay so I notice little bits of grass here and there. I've got that in my garden and I'm scared it will get out of control.

how do you keep grass managed?

@grendel84 I have a stirrup hoe but in high summer the grass gets out of control and I use a hori hori to cut it out at the roots. Idk it's a constant struggle! You can also mulch paths and/or put down cardboard

@selfsame
this right here is why you NEVER stack damp hay in a barn.

unless you took out a big insurance policy…

@grendel84 yeah not sure the exact temperature it can combust at but it definitely happens

"How Hot's Your Pile?"

@selfsame internet says to get a pile that hot you've got to keep it moist and also ensure it's got enough air... so are you turning that mountain by hand with a pitchfork? (omg) or do you have some cool compost tech to feed air and moisture into it?

or is it just kicking off like that with no extra effort on your part

@pho4cexa I did add water as I was building the pile, but yeah a fresh pile has all the O2 it needs for a few weeks. I'm supposed to turn it a few times to cook the outer layers too and yes you use a pitchfork!
