hi #AU / #Aus (especially #CBR / #NSW ) #FediFriends 👋

is anyone running a #meshtastic / #LoRa / #LoRaWAN node? I’m keen to hear what hardware you’re using & any #recs / tips / traps… 🙏 (I’m aware of frequency requirements for AU)

pls #boost4reach 💕

@itgrrl Just started experimenting with meshtastic. Got a sensecap tracker T1000-E, Node P1-Pro on the roof and a Heltec V4.

No recommendations yet, but I can keep track of the T1000-E around 5-6kms radius from the roof top P1-Pro. I live in a reasonably urban environment.

@arichtman @brisbane_meshtastic

note to self: remember that nerds can & do bridge anything to the public internet so watch what you Tx… 😩

@itgrrl @arichtman @brisbane_meshtastic That's me! Join all the wires!

I bought a pair of heltec v3s for mucking-about purposes. One of them is on my roof and feeding @brisbane_meshtastic , the other is currently on my workbench getting ready to be built into a solar-powered node.

If you send me your node IDs I can add them to a blocklist on my bridge, so you can shitpost in (relative) privacy if you like!

@itgrrl I’ve got a ttgo t-beam, paxcounter and t-deck. They’re all good but the t-deck is really nice for handheld use. For stationary use, something cheaper with an SMA anyltenna connector like the t-deck makes better sense. Wanna beta test my “hothail” hat for ESP32 D1 mini?

@Unixbigot thx! 💕

(I do not wish to beta test stuff at this time, but thx for the offer)

@itgrrl it's on my list of projects so keen to hear what people have to say, also @brisbane_meshtastic
@itgrrl NYC here. WisBlock has the best energy profile for solar nodes. Alternatives suck too much energy to work as stand alone solar node. No Wi-Fi though but they released a new module that has Wi-Fi but have not tried it yet. Different antennas for different environments. Long fiber glass does well in high open spaces and whip antennas do well in more urban environments. If you seal the node pretty well it will still look new in a year. Always check polarity before connecting the battery.
@itgrrl ohh. you can update firmware through Bluetooth no need to open or take down an outdoor node.

@itgrrl I'm on #meshcore the VIC network is pretty expansive and I've heard from key members that they're planning a link to tassie with a yagi. MT has lost out here we think because it isn't suited as well for large area deployments.

I have a lilygo t-pager and a t-deck. I bought 3 t114s to muck around with also.

@theraspb thx! 💕

are there any links to VIC stuff, esp. meshcore vs meshtastic? I don’t wanna lose the new VHS / BetaMax war… 🤪

@itgrrl im not too sure if its a war anymore lol (https://meshcore.co.uk/map.html vs https://meshtastic.liamcottle.net)

afaik, because of the dedicated repeater style network and route selection the protocol is much better suited for large deployments (some people say that Meshtastic can be better for ad-hoc setups) unfortunately i havent really found many links to sites talking about this, there is a big channel with most of the VIC crew on the meshcore discord where most of the questions and discussions take place. i dislike discord but the people in there generally share lots of info around, lots of individual people are working on doing much more rural deployments to link up lots of victoria

@itgrrl this is a video that i watched before i got any of my kit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T56GTiHvZuE but it is pretty meshcore biased, which i guess i am also. hopefully that helps a bit? sorry i can be a little rambly
