prime example of why ai is woefully inadequate for alt text. attached is an image along with the alt text the mastodon app provided for it (posted by another user who i am not tagging so as not to suggest anybody should flame them)

ive seen a poll going around recently that suggested people who rely on alt text for images would prefer ai generated alt text than none at all, but this makes me wonder: did those who voted that way know when it was generating totally misleading alt text? or did they presume it was accurate, or at least accurate enough, and that was better than nothing? (assuming that wasn't just pro-ai mfs who can totally see skewing results)

@xyhhx I'm so confused, what am I missing (not that I would use Ai for alt text, but I don't get why it's wrong in the example you brought, and I think I must be missing some cultural reference or double entender)

@Gal_they the alt text i provided here describe the issue: they're unrelated posts, they just appear adjacent to each other on this person's timeline. the generated alt text describes them as an interaction between each other, talking about trump's second term. my post has nothing to do with trump, even!
