Sometimes the old technology is the best technology.

@NanoRaptor

I prefer the red LCD model that uses a proper Atari joystick for input 😉

@NanoRaptor Technology has come a long way. In 1970, it required an entire hollowed out mountain and a dedicated control facility to just play one MP3.
@socketwench @NanoRaptor OMG is that from Colossus: The Forbin Project? That takes me back!
@socketwench @NanoRaptor but Colossus looks so much cooler than an iPod!
@NanoRaptor I was in a technology museum, and there were 3 old rotary phones and a piece from an old phone exchange. The acoustic experience was just unbelievable, really like sounds from my childhood. We completely forgot how it sounded back then. It almost made me cry.
@NanoRaptor my kid on the other side of the line didn't really appreciate it :)
@bonkers
I witnessed a kid in such a museum, confronted with an old phone, saying
"But how do you know what numbers to dial?"
Goid question actually.
@NanoRaptor how'd you find one with still working microcore memory???
@xssfox
My guess is she had to weave her own

@NanoRaptor

This is the future they stole from us.

@NanoRaptor The collaboration between HP and Apple to make the iPod-67 was pretty great.
Somehow reminds me of the mp3 player I had as a teen, it had a bitmap LCD but it also only fit two short lines of text at most
@NanoRaptor I actually do have an old mp3 player somewhere with red LED display, and compactflash storage. The display alone gave it a weird anachronistic feel even when it was new.
@isaackuo @NanoRaptor I has CF card with 2 (TWO) megabytes in.
@boozook @NanoRaptor That's like 1.3 floppies! Luxury.

@NanoRaptor I have a new theory that we peaked at chunky dot matrix — it came after 7-seg, but before hires LCD
@NanoRaptor based entirely on the Casio watches I wanted as a kid
@NanoRaptor The Sinclair Radionics MP3 players were less expensive, but you had to be careful not to drain the batteries too far or they could burst.

@NanoRaptor yep.

just found around 3 weeks ago that some people reimplemented MPC with QT.

This most modern players, including vlc are really missing easy to access feature to skip individual video frames.

And org. mpc has a ton of features, hope that that project will not be abandonded :)

@NanoRaptor ooh, I haven’t seen a display like that in a long time, I’d almost forgotten them
@NanoRaptor This is such a beautiful piece.
Im not sure anything by Apple can qualify
@NanoRaptor I want one of those so badly… Maybe with even older-school controls.
@NanoRaptor What the fuck why do I want this so bad
@NanoRaptor i'm begging of you please, don't take my RAM…
@NanoRaptor Indeed. People still use pencils. Think about that!
@NanoRaptor Ha. Nice. I'm off to find my Creative Nomad IIc. I wonder what mp3 files will be on it.
@NanoRaptor this one I'm sad it's one of yours because holy fuck I'd buy it!
@NanoRaptor Does anyone know what those digit displays are called? I need to make something with them, so cool. They look like tiny Nixie tubes but I don't think it's the same technology.
@NanoRaptor I'm thinking maybe tiny 7 (?) segment LED digits with glass lenses in front of them?
@alexanderdyas @[email protected] I call ‘em “bubble displays”, and that seems to be a searchable term. They’re tiny 7 segment LED displays with lenses in front of them.
@forty2 Perfect, indeed I’m now getting hits. Thanks! I feel a new project coming on…

@alexanderdyas @NanoRaptor

You want red VFDs or LED displays. VFD will be way cooler, and way more impossible to find, though.

@bayindirh @NanoRaptor Wow, excellent resource, thanks. I love old display technology. I fear eBay will make some more money out of me…

@NanoRaptor

Imagine a Beowulf cluster of those things ... oh, sorry, wrong forum. 😜

But can it run RockBox?

It's in moments like these when I hope this modded iPhone Nano was real. Or at least, that somebody attempts to make it real

@NanoRaptor You make these, make us dream, make us yearn for things which didn't and won't happen.

You deserve a friendly soft punch on the shoulder for being like this.

While on the subject, please _never_ stop being like this. We need you!

@NanoRaptor Sometimes a click wheel is the best interface.
@NanoRaptor Does it read the song from punch cards?
@NanoRaptor whoa I don’t remember these. I remember them with a screen. Loved the button and wheel combination
