Dear Internet,

when do I get glasses that automatically adapt to the distance?

I don't want progressive lenses, I want glasses that magnify on short distances all by itself and switch back to normal when I climb on my bike.

At least 10 years ago they were announced as "pretty soon". It's getting urgent on my side now.

Sincerely, rapidly aging me

@masek Oh, I have some of those in my hovercar
@catsalad Just switch to hyperdrive and drop them off here for a short evaluation here.
@masek @catsalad
We first need the fusion reactor coming in 10 years since the 90s to power the flux capacitor.
@masek @catsalad I want the reverse. I want my computer screens to focus properly for my eyesight. I hate glasses.
@masek A couple of friends of mine have had pentafocal lenses implanted in their eyes - after a week or two the brain re-optimises itself and uses the correct focal length. Seems like magic to me but they apparently work.
@steely_glint @masek Multifocal implant surgery is expensive, $thousands per eye if you don't have cataracts. Most insurances don't cover any of it.
They are permanent, require invasive eye surgery. If considering this, note that there are medical risks. Usually they are implanted when cataracts are removed and surgery is medically necessary. Then insurance covers the surgery, but you'll pay $thousands out of pocket for lenses.
Multifocal contact lenses are available.They have their own issues.
@Barbramon1 @masek Yeah, I'd need a really compelling reason to do it, it seems absurdly risky to me, but they seem happy with the results.
@steely_glint @masek I worked in ophthalmology for decades, so just wanted to put the facts out there. Unlike glasses, it's not without risk. Personally, I would never have the procedure unless I needed cataract surgery, but to each his own.
@masek They're working on it, but sending everything you see to their cloud service is a bigger technical challenge than anticipated.
@masek I'm looking carefully at these Martin, came on the market a few months ago...

IXI – The world's first autofocus eyewear

Discover adaptive glasses with autofocus lenses that adjust to your viewing needs, providing seamless clarity at any distance.

@masek Not for sale just yet but hopefully very soon.
@Dolphinchaz @masek I’m suspicious that when these come on the market they’ll end up as a subscription service and/or dependent on regular software updates. I’d also be curious as to what prescription they fall into when the battery dies.
@Chigaze @masek Indeed Paul, I'm keeping an open mind about them and not getting my hopes up too much.
@masek
I'd even be happy about manual distance selection, preferrably with 3 presets (reading, monitor, far sight).
Autofocus glasses watch your eyes, and shift their focus accordingly

Finnish startup IXI is on a mission to reinvent what eyewear can be, and it now seems to be just a step away from turning that vision into reality. The company's autofocus glasses are currently in the final stages of development before their official launch.

New Atlas
@masek right after the first fusion power station is active
@masek don't understand why most of my lens' is not ground to the prescription anyone with neck issues would love glasses where you don't need to turn your head to look up, down or out of the corner of your eye ie sweet spot is actually the entire lens
@masek We don't have those but we do have a thing that summarizes articles incorrectly, which is just as good
