“Governments should join the Fediverse!”
IMO, Governments should have websites that work and are regularly updated and should leave social media entirely.

Could be much worse in other places.
On the one hand I'm surprised that they managed to root out all the BSD enclaves, on the other hand cats can be pretty ruthless…
I do appreciate gov.uk. Most bits of it work very well.
Verifying my identity to Companies House as an owner or part owner of a company however is a complete bloody nightmare.
@BenCotterill @Nickiquote it's got some very solid design guidelines that imo any public service should be taking inspiration from.
Top notch accessibility and clarity.
Can't account for what's put on it, but it's a strong foundation.
@Nickiquote Mostly yes unless they are good at shitposting
(looking at you, Rijkswaterstaat)
@rachel @Nickiquote individual humans can also do that
on the fediverse moderation is distributed too and we can block those governments if they are not posting on behalf of the people.
as long as the gov is just one server and not The Entire Network, it's fine
@hans If it’s informational I think it’s a good thing. Get information out there. New laws, new changes one should be aware of, emergencies of different kinds.
But individuals screaming and hollering or trying to outsmug everyone? No thank you. Doesn’t even matter if I agree at that point.
@Nickiquote I think goverments should better communicate with citizens and social media is one way to do it. Goverments should adapt to citizens needs, not the opposite way.
Another topic is how much should goverments participate in social media discussions.
@Nickiquote - but what if I want a stream of notifications when those websites update?
My brother in W3Christ, that's what RSS is for
Self-hosting profile with no registration opening is like the only acceptable way if they ever come to ActivityPub, other ways would be dangerous (example: truth dot social) (that means you could fediblock the self-hosted profile)
Edit: I accidentally invented WordPress 2.0
@enigmatico @Nickiquote not entirely.
@Zoll is pretty responsive and not just posting their press announcements.
@kkarhan @enigmatico @Nickiquote
Please don‘t roast us, though! 🙈
As someone whose government has a presence in the Fediverse (on their own instance), I don't mind it at all. It's even kind of nice to see some of the (smaller) government organizations replying to comments.
But it obviously cannot replace a reliable website with all relevant information.
