Linus Torvalds calls a spade a spade

@Leander

Lol. He's right on the money

@Leander Years, and years, and years ago, I got to meet Linus at a conference, and he was not what I was expecting. I went up to him, nervous as fuck, and he just looked at me and said "are you needing the restroom?" That was it. I couldn't look him in the eye. Like he has zero filter.
@Leander I don't normally watch much ltt anymore but Real Linus was so fun to hear from to in that
@Leander You can take the Finn out of Finland ...
@Leander Elon is a dumb pedophile fascist
@Leander Ooooooooooh burn....

@Leander Maybe I should make a cut of that clip that isn't cropped to vertical with those horrendous one-word subtitles.

Fucking Tiktok.

@Leander The entire video is amusing, but this clip nails it.
@WTL Where do I find the rest of the movie?
@eq @WTL on youtube, if you look for "Linus and Linus"

@WTL Thanks, very fun :)
@eq Happy to help!
@Leander reminds me of that and i like it
@Leander If it's not been said already I DARE ( with obvious 'yes but' in different cases ) to say that "the best coder is the one that does the most with the least and simplest lines of code" .. it's a case of "less is more" ..

@Leander does dantiksuptok not allow you to supply proper alt text to show to ppl on other softwares

wow

@zaire @Leander I feel like Alt text isn’t really applicable to areas where actual video with development in it is the norm, the equivalent would be something like an audio description track and subtitles. And that’s much harder to do. You can of course write a description of what happens, but to me that doesn’t feel like Alt text either…
@zaire @Leander (this is an argument about the name, not the thing)
@Leander The muskrats programming skills were already old in the 1990s.

@Leander Reminds me of this story about Bill Atkinson reporting that he wrote -2000 lines of code:

https://www.folklore.org/Negative_2000_Lines_Of_Code.html

Folklore.org: -2000 Lines Of Code

@Leander that metic went out of style before I even joined IBM, but I remember tales of KLOC measurements.

@Leander I rarely watch LTT but that episode was full of gold.

For those who haven't seen it, it's here - https://youtu.be/mfv0V1SxbNA

@Leander I was once asked in an interview how may LOC I had written. I thought it was a ridiculous question, and am glad to see I am not the only one.

@Leander

Just for a second I had a nice fantasy where Linus was convinced to do something like DOGE.

@Leander Linus has quite a look at old age, nice one
@Leander Um, that's Linus from Linus Tech Tips, not Linux Torvalds, the creator of Linux.
@Leander Goodhart's Law is alive and well.

@Leander
The fact Linus Sebastian gave as much deference to Musk is itself a statement.

Anyone who is steeped in the tech community should be aware of how bad a coder Musk was/is. Famously all his code at Pay Pal had to be re-done because it was so inefficient and problematic.

Then there is the "move fast and break things" (strictly speaking, it was Zuckerberg who said that) approach to both software and hardware development which is reckless and deliberately & unethically externalizes costs.

@Leander
The people who value KLOCs and code bloat are hardware manufacturers and electricity providers.

That is why “Big Iron” IBM incentivised KLOCs and why the new hegemony of cross investment between Fossil Fuel and Generative BS is pushing higher and higher line counts.

The less efficient the algorithms are, the slower the computers are and the more inclined users are to upgrade.
Also, the more power is consumed.

@Leander

No one ever "accidentally dunks" on that fucker.

It's instead called "stating a tautology" and while not argumentatively useful, it's easy to do and not at all a risk to the speaker since their statement is always true.

@Leander I love the "Apparently I was right on." part...laughed when I watched the original, and it still makes me laugh every time I hear it....
