How UI degrades over time.

Top (Windows 95): great contrast, obvious shapes. Instantly readable.

Middle (Windows 11): shapes are still self-explanatory, but contrast is gone.

Bottom (Windows 11 Insiders): what am I even looking at? The only shape I can understand here is the Run button. Barely visible, though.

Then, on the left, there’s another something that says Run and has an icon. What is it? A window title? Another button? Why does it have to say Run twice?

@grumpy_website

250 million laptops.
Two hundred and fifty million win10 laptops have been "made landfill" by windows11.

Windows 11 doesnt work, has handcuffs, is designed to spy and report, is crammed with AI, and rhe CEO saidcrecently all core functions ate broken, its written by AI.

Ram prices ate skyrocketing, malware and viruses exploding.

Nazis taking over government, led by tech Bros.

Its time.

#linux

@kevinrns @grumpy_website it’s just because of #tpm and secure boot right? Pretty sure there is a way to bypass that now.

@nixfreak @kevinrns @grumpy_website

Not only TPM ... just the amount of RAM required to run Windows is gastronomic compared to Linux.

I mean, you can get a fully fledged, top-notch 2025 user-experience on a 10 year old laptop with 8-16GB RAM and an Intel i5 CPU if you install Linux on it. And then we're talking about a Linux release from 2025.

Such a machine would barely be able to run Windows10 with a smooth user experience.

@dazo @nixfreak @kevinrns @grumpy_website

I bought this machine in 2018, and I wasn't the first owner. Does everything I need it to do.

@dazo @kevinrns @grumpy_website yeah all my systems are 10+ years all #linux right now some #bsd. Besides eBay what else are some other good places to get cheap hardware?

@nixfreak @dazo @grumpy_website

Buy?

Online? Ask for free everyday, Microsoft is obsolescing 250,000,000 devices, they cannot run win11 and win10 will be virus encrusted, unsupported.

Its throw out 250 million laptops, or install linux.

Its criminal, but, possibly, a software revolution.

#linux

@kevinrns @grumpy_website It's time to make #Linux Just Fucking Work. There are many, many reasons people will not switch to Linux or don't stick with it if they try it. It's a lot more than just "how do I install it?" and Linux aficionados need to learn to be a lot more fucking helpful to newbies. Documentation needs to be better. Things need to stop requiring arcane command line usage (and don't try to tell me they don't). There's a lot of work to be done for Linux to become popular.

@audreygwinter @kevinrns @grumpy_website

OK, you first.

It JFW s for me. I don't really care if it's popular, as long as they stop fscking with the standards. And much of that is a matter of law rather than tech. I don't want to be spied upon by every a*hole with a credit card.

@lemgandi @kevinrns @grumpy_website I'm not going to use an OS that I have to turn into a CS wizard to get to do what I want and that doesn't support a shitton of software I use on a daily basis, including games. So yeah, I'm glad it works for you. It doesn't Just Fucking Work for me.

@audreygwinter

This reads like it was posted in 2000s.

It's now more than ever easier to install Linux, it's more simple to maintain, it's easier to install things via package manager.

I would argue it's easier to use than Windows if you grab the right distro.

I don't miss having to faff about in the registry editor & dealing with hidden settings that I have to add to actually change.

The software I left behind in Windows 10 is not missed.

Just reads like a salty salty post from the past.

@audreygwinter

Also, long live the command line.

@milagemayvary Just reads like an ivory tower-blind post from a computer-savvy Linux user who doesn't understand not everybody is him.

@audreygwinter

Shouldn't be so hard on your self.

More people should seek knowledge, the computer is the bicycle of the mind.

Now excuse me while I RTFM & DOS for dummies til I 💤

@milagemayvary You... really have no clue, do you? All right, we'll give this round to you... mostly because I don't have the time or patience to shove your face in the blindingly obvious. Lead a horse to water, and all that.

@audreygwinter

Its not just the software that I dislike.

I'm Just a rebel without a clue who doesn't care to support oppressive corporations.

Not to mention all the contracts handed by various goverments around the world to MS for infrastructure that helps drones via Azure in surveillance & dropping bombs with minimal latency.

Not only are they not allies, but accomplices to tearing away rights and freedoms from all of us.

So this horse ain't drinking that water.

@milagemayvary You've totally missed the point. You may be a rebel, but you're a computer-savvy one. That means using Linux is easy for you. It is not easy for people who aren't you, and no matter how saintly your crusade, it will not change that. I congratulate you on your stand against Microsoft. I'm sad you don't realize it won't change anything.

@audreygwinter

Nothing worthwhile in life is easy.

Take care & be well.

@audreygwinter @kevinrns @grumpy_website this is free software. You pay zero for it. Where on earth do you get off demanding that a free as in feeedom operating system you have done zero to support do what you want in the way you want it?

The operating systems that work the way you want and do what you want already exist. They are called windows or osx. You pay for them. That's how Apple and Microsoft can afford to pay the salaries of literally 10s of thousands of developers needed to do that.
