A New York subway rider has accused a woman of breaking his Meta smart glasses.

“She just broke my Meta glasses,” said the TikTok user, who goes by eth8n, in a video that has since garnered millions of views.

“She was the only person annoyed. I never spoke to her, I even let her sit down when she got on the train at 42nd street, and I continued to stand.”

But instead of coming to his support,
the internet wholeheartedly rallied behind the alleged perpetrator,
celebrating the woman as a folk hero — and perfectly highlighting how the public feels about gadgets like Meta’s smart glasses.

“Good, people are tired of being filmed by strangers,” one user commented

@cdarwin Good on her! He has no right to film her without her permission.

@nedhamson1 okay now remove every CCTV camera. no? your argument isnt about cameras then.

its a public space for a reason. there is no expectation of privacy.

the issue is internet connected to a giant unaccountable corporation or government.

I capture footage on my bodycam as a #BikeCommuter of cars doing things that could kill me like running me off the road a couple days ago. Without it nothing can happen unless I actually die. I've been hit. You'd take that away from me.

Random people can video or photos of you and put them up on the internet or even make a deepfake of you doing something degrading, like being in a porn video.

@MisuseCase so why arent you railing against every random street facing CCTV camera you pass by? have you a means to find out who wouldve done it if a rando employee extracts your face and deepfakes it into porn of a different background?

no?

that's a bad faith argument that biases in favor of power and perpetrator of crimes.

@nedhamson1 @cdarwin

@MisuseCase you're inventing a strawman.

i wear a bodycam daily and just a few days ago a car nearly killed me by driving into a bike lane, clearly captured on video.

im a real person being harmed already. fuck off with your invented scenarios.
