The CEO of The Onion set the publication's goal for 2026 to have more subscribers than The Washington Post. At the rate the latter is going, that won't take long.

"For reasons we don't like or understand, our work has become increasingly important."

"Look, we're an independent company, we don't use AI to write headlines and make art, and we're one of roughly three publications who are up for the fight. Unlike other places, The Onion is quadrupling down on being a pain in the ass, politically. Are you?

It's been a big year for us at The Onion, but as media collapse accelerates, it is unfortunately going to be a fucking great year for us next year. So I sent an email to our members with our goal for 2026: More print subscribers than The Washington Post. This is, tragically and hilariously, feasible. Here's a note I sent to our members with how we spent our money last year, and how they can expect us to abuse it next year. We spent a lot of money taunting ICE and Jeffrey Epstein, we spent even more money yelling at Congress for not taunting ICE and Jeffrey Epstein, and we stupidly continue to try to buy InfoWars. In short: The Onion is an independent company, we don’t use AI to write headlines or make art, and we’re one of roughly three publications who are up for the fight. Unlike other places, The Onion is quadrupling down on being a pain in the ass, politically. Quadruple down with us. The world might make a tiny bit of sense. | 76 comments on LinkedIn

@briankrebs They could add a real news vertical of their own after that.
@briankrebs I subscribed this year. They are hilarious and right on the money. Be the change you want to see in the world, and in this specific case, the change is coming from my pocket.
@briankrebs @dangillmor This reminded me that I should subscribe to the onion so I just signed up.
@adrianco @briankrebs @dangillmor same... don't need more paper, but happy to throw them money.
@adrianco @briankrebs @dangillmor It makes a great xmas present :)

@briankrebs I recently watched a Weekly Show interview with Maria Ressa and she kept telling John Stewart to take what she's saying and make it funny.

I'm paraphrasing...

Make it funny, John. Take what's important and make it funny so people will listen.
