How interesting. If I had not called my Member Services rep of my health insurance today and gotten ahold of a young, maybe inexperienced staff from Blue Cross Blue Shield, maybe I wouldn’t know now that beginning January 1, there is a NEW deductible for any prescription medications. I have to pay $385 IN JANUARY before I can have any insurance coverage on ANY of my meds. I kept asking questions and that little nugget slipped out. I haven’t got any plans to have surgery or ER visits in 2026, but who knows, I may be unlucky and have thousands more in copays for services.

I take 6 daily meds. These are necessary meds, not optional. 2 are costing me $100 EACH MONTH copay, each prescription, because insurance has them as “out of Formulary” as “Tier 4” drugs. So $2,400 cash out of my Social Security “income”. This “income” is a benefit because I ALREADY PAID INTO SOCIAL SECURITY for over 50 years. I’ve been paying for this each year from every job I had FOR FIFTY YEARS.

Back to my concern about paying for medication I need. In 3 weeks it will become almost $3,000 a year for 2 meds ($385 deductible + $2,400) that I have to pay for. And I’m lucky (?) to have Medicare ADVANTAGE insurance and lucky to have Blue Cross Blue Shield as opposed to some other insurance? And for the privilege of having this insurance a monthly government-required member fee of $172 a month comes straight out of my monthly Social Security check. I have no choice in this. But hey, my insurance tells me all the time how great it is I have Medicare ADVANTAGE. I’m pissed. I have only 2 more business days to research finding a different insurance company. Or I take a chance and get insurance somewhere that will LET ME get just Medicare instead of Medicare ADVANTAGE. I could be denied because of my medical history.

Here’s the corker: Trump’s federal government wants to cut back even further any medical coverage by Medicare. In addition to the billions of dollars in cuts already agreed to in Congress. Cuts the public still doesn’t know will be made and when they will take effect. How will they will be decided on as to what is cut? Is the Trump federal government just going to stop benefits when it wants to? Are medications included in the billions of dollars of cuts, or services? Or both?

Soooo, if I drop Medicare ADVANTAGE will it be worse for me? No one freakin’ knows. #Medicare #MedicareAdvantage #Medication #Insurance #UShealthcare #HealthInsurance

I started AGAIN today trying to find out how to get a Medicare plan and drop my Medicare Advantage plan. I have now tried 8 times online to find the name of A company that has Medicare in Arizona. And worse yet 3 “independent” insurance sites led me specifically to my own existing Advantage insurer. I can’t even find a LIST I Arizona so I can start making calls after 8 am.

There is some kind of rotten enmeshment going on that I can’t even find a list. Does this mean the whole state has only got Medicare Advantage? Notice what happened in the screenshot when I attempted to ask medicare.gov

@cobalt123 In my town in Washington, there's an insurance consultant that everyone raves about, Susie. Apparently she truly is independent and can help people find good insurance to meet their needs. There has to be someone like that in Arizona. Are you talking to people or just checking websites? I have a few older friends who live in Arizona and will ask them what they use. One of them is up here in Wickenburg where I am now and the other is in Gilbert. Let me see what I can find out.

@mlanger thanks. I had an independent broker come last year to my home to ask same. She said I am unable to have a Medicare plan instead of Medicare Advantage in Arizona. I think in this state it is not possible to drop down to Medicare once you are already enrolled. She told me my only Medicare Advantage plans in Arizona are Cigna and BCBS.

She told me a year ago I needed to stay with BCBS because of my meds. That BCBS doesn’t cover. It means that since they are in my medical history, another insurer can deny me. I was HOPING she was wrong. I will make more calls today just to find out if there are any insurers in AZ now that only offer Medicare insurance so I can call them.

@cobalt123 @mlanger

Is this program helpful: https://azship.org/

In MA we have a somewhat similar program called SHINE, their counselors were quite helpful.

Arizona SHIP – Navigating Medicare

@cobalt123 Did you do this through the Medicare website? It's no fun to navigate. What you need is an independent insurance agent for life and health. A local one.
@Lynn I got a local one last year. She said I can’t leave Medicare Advantage.
@cobalt123 That's totally crazy. How can AZ legally only offer Medicare Advantage plans and not traditional Medicare?

@Lynn oh I don’t know. Oh wait, state government decides how to spend federal money given to the state. Perhaps Arizona politicians worked out, with Arizona insurance corporations, er, a mutually advantageous “arrangement”, somehow. Whatcha think?

(Heavy sarcasm above)
Actually after 1 entire hour on the phone with a “state” paid “advisor” I do know how to get Medicare Original plan and the needed Medigap plan I’d have to pay a monthly premium for. But I now have a downloaded booklet through azship.org that lists all 30 some insurance companies I can call to buy a Medigap plan. Lots of calls I will be making all day tomorrow!

@cobalt123 Isn't that often the way of it? It's disgusting. SMH!
@cobalt123 When I googled this, it came up with three states where retirees can be limited to MA plans--Alabama, Arizona and Colorado. I think this is so wrong. Ugh!

@cobalt123
What is known as "Original Medicare" doesn't involve an insurance company. You enroll directly from medicare.gov. That's what I did (parts A and B). Part D does involve an insurance company and it made sense in my case to get what's called a "Medigap" policy (also from an insurance company) to cover costs not covered by A and B.

There are programs called SHINE and SHIP that states have to help with issues like this. I suggest checking out the Arizona SHIP program:

Arizona SHIP – Navigating Medicare

@JJ thanks! I was likely already on the phone with a man from azship when you added this! This is what I found out

@cobalt123
Great. Don’t forget part D (prescriptions).
@JJ NP - it was in the lists and charts I got when the State SHIP man had me go online to download. He says likely $35-50 per month. Sad part is the sample rates on Medigap and for prescriptions are only for up to age 65. I was told I would have to call and ask for the special prices. Meaning: they are higher.

@cobalt123 I'm so sorry for what you will be experiencing. There are so many cuts to insurance plans in 2026, many of which people are not at all aware of. I've paid in to SSA, just as you have, and it's disgusting to think the Trump regime could make changes at any time. Congressional oversight seems to be gone.

This year, I seriously looked into opting out of Medicare, altogether, and taking come what may. I learned that really isn't even an option because, if I opted out of Medicare, that premium amount that is deducted from our SS each month cannot be returned to us as an increase in the amount of Social Security we receive. I feel there is so much more we do not know about what is happening between the federal government and the private insurance industry. I do think 100% of what is happening does not benefit the consumer.

@cobalt123 Wow, that's absolutely *terrible*.

If anything, this highlights the true suffering #Trump wants to inflict on everyday #Americans.

If it isn't clear yet, then it is now:

#Eugenics is the #GOP strategy.

@cobalt123 I don't have the answer for you but I know that I'm going to avoid Medicare advantage next year when I finally become eligible. Did you see the John Oliver episode that covers Medicare advantage? It does not look like a good deal unless you can get good, affordable coverage and don't go anywhere. I've had terrible luck getting any kind of good coverage, even now, and I travel all the time. Do yourself a favor and watch the video. Then try to find a healthcare consultant. Good luck!

I have been warned that Medicare advantage was not such an "advantage" by a few people and this explains why.

@mlanger Yhanks. My son told me yesterday to search for this episode. Pretty much, it exactly shows my problems. BTW, 3 years ago I had one “third-party authorization” required by my Advantage plan. THIS year I now have THREE. Gosh, I wonder why. My insurer says “the government requires us to use this third-party authorization”. Ever since Medicare Advantage kicked into overdrive 3 years ago I basically now have 1/3 the care and 3 times my copays and deductibles.
