Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how The Hacking Games, a for profit company, is totally making shit up?
@GossiTheDog yeah, cuz it's absolute bs.
@kkarhan @GossiTheDog 300 Baud Modem is the Origin Story.
@elfin @GossiTheDog nah, #Sneakernet with Floppies and Tapes or GTFO!
@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog tapes? You mean paper tape right? *whistles innocently* (On a PDP-8)

@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog I still have some of those, as well as a few 9t tapes not the 800BPI stuff though. *g*
@Dianora @elfin @GossiTheDog personally I wished I had the €€€€€ to get like a few LTO-10 drives and offer #airgapped #OfflineBackups charging customers per tape and access time...
Linear Tape-Open - Wikipedia

@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog I've worked in a Tempest room.
It's a security nightmare nowadays with unauthorised WAPs and USB sticks. ugh.
I'd love LTO as well. I've heard used ones are sane enough in price but still...
@Dianora @elfin @GossiTheDog Granted the Idea I'd have would be more of a backup archival storage facility with maximum privacy that only charges per media and handling of said media.
@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog I like the idea. A lot of folks are using over the 'net archival solutions. For most of us, that would be fine but for some.... {fill in blank} situations not so fine.

@kkarhan @Dianora @GossiTheDog I had LTOs at one client's ... loved them.

*I* had an IOMEGA SCSI Jazz (and an Adaptec PCMCIA card for my laptop, and an ATI VLB SCSI adapter with an sx processor and 32MB of RAM that was stupid fast) for moving data around. And like half a dozen Jazz Carts. I could move whole servers in my pocket. Miss that drive.

@elfin @Dianora @GossiTheDog personally, I think we need an open standard for portable SSDs that is actually multi-vendor...

@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog Interesting idea. Although why not make the drive itself with BT or UWB ? Stick it into a slot and contactless connection. UWB would be the way to go. If done right it shouldn't be possible to sniff it even with the right gear.
Just a thought.

You reminded me of a story I heard at Dynalogic. Someone had a lot of problems with their 8" floppy system they used to sell. So a tech went out to watch, the user *RIPPED* the bare floppy out of the holder to use it and complained they were hard to open.

@Dianora @elfin @GossiTheDog well, wireless is slower, requires more tech, power, parts and cost than wired and the 3,5" form factor would yield the advantages of handling characteristics, sufficient size, surface area and compatibility with media libraries and autoloaders.

@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog @vwestlife Yes which is why I thought UWB might help. It was just a crazy thought but I agree with your conclusion here.

@Dianora @elfin @GossiTheDog personally I want to use an LGA-style 'drive head' that just contacts the pins at the surface in the "contact window" for an easier design.

  • Edge-Connectors may not last for many cycles and don't have the necessary repetitive precision.

This is one of the reason "#FloppySD - and *"Cartridge Conversions" of #microSD & #SD cards don't really work well…

@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog *shudder* the PCB edge connector scrapes off eventually. Horrible. I like your idea.

@Dianora @elfin @GossiTheDog I mean, if it's good enough for connecting DDR5-6000-RAM (AM5) it certainly is good enough for PCIe, SATA, USB 3.0 and SD interfaces

  • Plus I want to reuse as much of the 3,5" FDD mechanical parts and system as possible and make it easy to build drives.

Because this will only succeed by mass adoption and widespread support, and that means it needs to be cheap, easy and fast.

I mean, if we want a better alternative to USB flashdrives it certainly needs to beat it wherever it can.

@kkarhan @Dianora @GossiTheDog @vwestlife NNNNGH. Not "Floppy DIsks", ALSO not Hard Disks.

@elfin @Dianora @GossiTheDog @vwestlife still the 3,5" 1440kB FDD will always be in our hearts!

@kkarhan @elfin @GossiTheDog I had a TTY15 at home which was slower.
