Since then, efficiency rules have been regularly tightened, compelling automakers to improve the fuel efficiency. Transportation is the single largest source of #GreenhouseGas #emissions in the #US.

Under a rule finalized in June 2024, the #Biden admin required automakers to achieve an average fuel efficiency of about 50 miles per gallon for new vehicles by model year 2031. To comply, federal ofcls expected that manufacturers would increase the sales of #ElectricVehicles, which use no #gasoline & would help boost the avg fuel efficiency across their product lines.

#Biden admin officials estimated that the rule would lower fuel costs by $23 billion while preventing more than 710 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere by 2050 — the equivalent of taking 165,000 cars off the roads.
