My 40-year-old wife went to buy champagne for our wedding anniversary dinner. I phoned the off licence after she left, gave a description of her and what she was buying and requested they ask her for ID. She came home absolutely beaming. It's the simple things.
@fesshole Sounds pretty patronizing to me.

I don't think it was meant in a bad way, some context is nearly all fesses are from the UK, where there is extensive use of CCTV and even AI scanning to assess peoples ages in retail as well as cultural awareness training, so staff nowadays rarely card anyone over 30.

I'm of Asian ancestry, look young for my age and was previously getting carded well into my 30s (and even occasionally in my 40s), but the staff (and the AI algorithms!) got trained to take note of ethnicity so this stopped happening about 5-10 years ago..

@vfrmedia
Or maybe you stopped looking young 5-10 years ago! 😜

I had put on some weight due to drinking traditional English ale (another pointer that I am unlikely to be underage) and likely fit into the stereotype of a middle aged British Asian who works in tech or the skilled trades and isn't forbidden by faith/culture from alcohol (there are a lot of such men round here, especially as you get closer to the North Sea coast, and both shop staff and AI training is taught to look out for this)

@beforewisdom @fesshole I have a wife in her early forties and I think this is a great idea. The trouble for me is that I tend to be the one who does the liquor shopping, so I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to try it.
@beforewisdom @fesshole I'm so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't think this is awesome!

Fetishising youth is actually kind of icky. As a 40-something woman I don't want to be infantilised, I want to be respected for the wisdom and experience I have so far accumulated.
