How to deal with your conservative relatives at Thanksgiving:
- keep to non controversial topics, like who should own the means of production
- focus on common ground, like how left communism is an infantile disorder
- remind them that Stalin was trapped in a game of realpolitik, and had few options

@existentialcomics So genociding my people by starvation was just ‘realpolitik’?

@alatiera I honestly thought that you knew better than reposting fash apologia. The guy had literally started the WW2 together with Hitler.

Or was there well-hidden irony in that bullet point that I’ve ended up misinterpreting?

@0x1eaf @existentialcomics @alatiera

Stalin was a monster. That he justified it with a good understanding of the political situation (and that he was scarred for life by western participation in the Russian Civil War) didn't make him less so.

Also (and this isn't to make amends): Stalin wasn't the only world leader to be so. Ofc Hitler, but Churchill was for the genocide of Americans and Australians by colonists as late as in 1937, and Roosevelt exiled US citizens with wrong colour scheme.

@0x1eaf @existentialcomics @alatiera

And not to forget that Stalin did his "sphere of influence" -gambit not just with Hitler, but with Churchill and Truman as well -- which not only doomed Eastern Europe to 50 years of occupation, but also threw under the bus people who had been co-operating with British Secret Service, etc (Brits gave the lists to Soviets after the war).
