Today, if all goes well, we're off to Berlin with regional trains. And off to a bad start.
The 09.33 RE4 arrives on time, but is taken out of service after ten minutes of uninformed passengers waiting. So we're packing ourselves into the 09.58 - two train loads in one - which, although here and ready, is marked down for a ten minute delay.
It's going to be far from a stressfree day today.
To prevent any confusion, and probably because the digital signs on the train are not working, it's announced that this is the RE41 to Hamburg.
One of the advantages of being a bearded Scot in a kilt, I have a four-seat with table all to myself. No one wants to take a chance....
Quite a few sections, on the way to Lűbeck, where track repairs are being carried out, and workers are next to the tracks, or on the next track. This train does not slow down.
Mixed feelings about this, of course, and I hope the security for the workers is good, as well as their insurance.
Straight across from one train to the next. The trains are not the problem at the moment, it's the people! Someone complaining my case is in the way, as I try to pack it in the area designed for suitcases, but won't let me out to pack it away. Had to tell them to move, which they found to be a good idea, intelligent, worth doing, and so on. Then, surprisingly, they moved and, to my pleasure, sat elsewhere.
Next stop Bad Kleinen, and a thirty-five minute changeover to the next train. Hopefully there will be a bakery there, as all this excitement has spurred my hunger on.
I wonder where the border was, back then. Must be soon.
Through Herrnburg, and the person complaining about my case was so slow getting to the door, he couldn't disembark. It is not, of course, his fault. I couldn't quite stifle my meanest chuckle.
First ticket inspection of the day, although in the first train - so long ago now - we were constantly being told to have our ID ready to show with tickets too.
On to the next train, from Bad Kleinen to Berlin, fortified with a small portion of nuts and raisins as the platforms has nothing else on offer.
The smallest luggage rack in the world above my head, enough room for my pullover, but not my rucksack.
Ever onward.
Two hours and nineteen minutes to Berlin, not exactly in comfort. And another ten minute changeover there to Berlin Spandau. Time to pull out Henrietta Hamilton, and see how Sally and Jonny solve the murder in the Willow Street.
