🤝 The tensions show a deeper truth: forcing “consensus” behind closed doors in a process dominated by a powerful fossil lobby — still undermining science and the #ParisAgreement — puts climate ambition at risk.
🇨🇴 Colombia showed real leadership.
They refused to be pressured by COP officials who ignored the concerns of vulnerable countries, #IndigenousPeoples, and civil society—while underestimating opposition to meaningful climate action.
👏 This courage matters. And it’s why the initiative led by Colombia + the Netherlands, endorsed by Brazil, to create a complementary track addressing the root cause of the climate emergency - aka #FossilFuels - is so important.

🔥 States that recognize the legal, moral, scientific & political imperative to #PhaseOutFossilFuels & the need to provide public finance at scale to enable ALL countries to do so, are no longer willing to wait and be constrained by the lowest common denominator.

The COP process itself needs reform.
We can’t keep letting the requirement for consensus be used as a shield for delay. The COP president requested best practices to improve this process. The COP must be reformed to ensure progress. #FixTheUNFCCC

Turning the attention to the next climate talks: Australia & Turkey will co-host #COP31.
In 🇦🇺words, while we look at “'innovative solution to the delivery of COP”, 🇦🇺 & 🇹🇷 must equip COP31 to effectively confront the climate crisis & deliver real climate action & accountability.

Negotiations over the COP31 presidency continue in Belém as Australia and Türkiye work toward agreement within the WEOG group. Pacific Island countries continue to push for climate talks that centre frontline communities. PICAN’s Dr Sindra Sharma stresses that the unresolved COP31 outcome does not change global responsibility to keep warming to 1.5°C and that final COP30 decisions will set the foundation for ambition and justice next year.
Looking at #COP31, the @UNFCCC must ensure that fundamental rights, civic space, and transparency are secured through a publicly accessible host country agreement.
💚 As the plenary closed, @[email protected] thanked all delegates & observers for visiting ‘the heart of the planet,’ explaining their welcome was an expression of "love for humanity.

Final words for this COP: #IndigenousPeoples reminded us all that the protection of environmental defenders & Indigenous communities is an obligation grounded in international law, stronger than any fragile political outcome & than any restrictions suffered by them at these talks.
