Software devs of the fedi, what would you do if your employer suddenly put every dev in the org on high priority projects with deadlines that are only possible to meet by working over time? The story we've been told is that these projects are 'a chance to prove yourself' but hot off the heels of a massive layoff of non-developer staff, it feels more like 'a chance to prove you are a good little lap dog' to me. There has also been a promise that coming out of this successful will yield a big compensation bump, but the details of said compensation have not been outlined. #softwareDevelopment #adviceNeeded #tech #layoffs #dev

@farrisswisher I don't have any practical gold, as I've not made it through similar crunches unscathed, but I would remind you of the importance of your network. Employers come and go, but cool coworkers/friends less so.

Good luck!

@hwll thanks! Yeah right now the best thing about this job is the people I work and shoot the shit with all day, I'll be happy if we can all stay in touch after whatever comes after this

@farrisswisher you definitely can! I'm part of several chats, and a regular lunch crew, made up of old coworkers going back many years now. Real friendships.

For anyone who doesn't know: It is a regular practice to establish a private chat with "company alumni" (those let go) and sympathetic coworkers (those who remain) after company layoffs, if such a private chat doesn't already exist.
