Here's a great throwback to a #FOSDEM video from 2016, "Your distro is a Scheme library" where @civodul shows some of the ways to query and configure #guix using #guile:

@guix Woow, that must have been the 2nd time @pjotrprins & co. organized a Guixy devroom (gonna be the 10th time this year!).

There’s more we can do at the REPL today; someone should do the 2026 edition this FOSDEM!

@guix @civodul

It's indeed a really nice presentation!

Unfortunately the common roots with #nix and the shared daemon code are more or less forgotten now and suppressed by an all-dominating "scheme and nothing else" ideology. This makes the project utterly blind for any interesting development and improvement attempts going on in the nix sphere -- e.g. the #snix efforts.

@mash_graz @guix The “Scheme and nothing else” ideology, as you call it, has always been there; it’s even one of the raisons d’être of Guix, and one of its strengths in my view.

That doesn’t mean that Guix people are blind to what others are doing and in particular Nix (we even shared a devroom a few days ago at a free software event in France).

(Fun fact: I even know the SNix from ca. 2009, where the S stood for “state”.)

@civodul @mash_graz @guix i think the snix reference is about snix.dev the fork of tvix which is a Rust reimplementation of Nix

i don't think the Guix peeps are blind but I think our communities are very busy to deal with the daily affairs inside of them, it's my wish that we are able to bridge the gaps and invite more (than just Guix!) to spaces where we can exchange/collaborate :)

@raito Yup, I know the modern-day Snix as well. :-)

And I agree, we’re all busy with our day-to-day stuff but the occasional meetings have always been fruitful and we can only hope for more!

@guix @mash_graz

@civodul @guix @mash_graz (for the record, i chose the name snix because tvix had proximity with twix, i like snickers so i wanted snix)
