Today I learned that my colleagues refer to the method I discovered for easily inserting a temperature probe into compost as "Jules's wiggly worm trick", and while I suppose I always wanted a scientific method named after me I wish it hadn't been this one
@afewbugs that is, uh, quite memorable.
@emkingma I may have to find a new job
@afewbugs take the wins where you can, I say
@afewbugs also known as the Julesie wiggle.
@econads thanks I hate it 😂

@afewbugs you're extremely welcome, Wiggley Jules.

Also please share the method, this is something I also will need to do again when I turn the compost and get my thermometer back. Does it just involve randomly wiggling the end until it goes in? (I'm so very sorry, that sounds really dirty)

@econads It does yes 😂 Our temperature probe is basically a rigid bit on the end of a cable, but the cable only has so much flex in it so if you hold it close enough to the rigid bit you can push it in as though it were rigid then slide your hand back a little way and do it again and there is absolutely no non dirty sounding way of describing any of this is there
@afewbugs well at least you gave me a good laugh. I think this doesn't apply to my thermometer which is entirely rigid (oh my God)
You know what, I'm just going to lean into it. "If you know what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink"
We are already lost.

@afewbugs @econads

This thread gave me a good chuckle, there’s nothing the right inflection can’t make dirty…

@econads @afewbugs honestly, I'm surprised how could anyone expect the conversation *not* to get dirty when two people are talking seriously about ...compost. Isn't that the end goal here?

@afewbugs unfortunately. We now need a video of this technique... Also thank you for making me laugh.
@quixoticgeek The name they've given it I feel like if I wanted to share a video I'd have to start an OnlyFans
@afewbugs depends what you grow. Maybe an only ferns...
@afewbugs @quixoticgeek
I'm not there, but I might be for non sexual videos of compost & worms.
@afewbugs @quixoticgeek Its never to late to be wormy on main.
@afewbugs @dtl
Take it. I got nothing. I was envious of the guy who got an annoying wiggle on an oscilloscope trace named after him.
@afewbugs one of our teammates got a change made after he had a rather unprofessional moment in a work chat channel in frustration, and we now call a last ditch effort to make change by pitching a fit "pulling a Mike".
@afewbugs Is there a "I would like to know more" reaction/emoji? I would click that.
@afewbugs
Keep at it, eventually it'll just be listed under "early work" in your Wikipedia page
@afewbugs Does it involve tying the probe to a worm and letting it pull the probe deeper into the compost like some kind of limbless, sightless, subterranean Rudolph?
@StarkRG how did you guess?
@afewbugs It's what I would do.

@afewbugs

I invented a buffer to replace PBS (Phosphate-Buffered Saline) in some DNA-binding experiments and my labmates started calling it SB (Steve's Buffer) but I insisted that since I invented it I get to name it and it's now published as EN (Ersatz Nucleoplasm).

@afewbugs no no, this is great news. bad would have been if you'd found out they were calling it "The Jules Technique". The "wiggly worm" being in there means that you've got some—no pun intended—wiggle room for other, perhaps more profound, techniques to be named after you
@afewbugs Heavy is the burden of those who progress science.
