@vkc

I am currently testing out stuff.
Someone recommended Brave to me, because it was data friendly and rather secure.

What is the issue with brave ( other than it using AI shit in default)?
I am genuinly asking because i want to be aware of issues that are connected with services i use and if it us something that makes it a no go for me or not.

In summary ( it is rather difficuld to understand as a non-native speaker who is no IT expert)bit is this?:

- they finance themselves using blockchain/krypto stuff
- they sell userdata to AI companies for training
- they implement AI themselves

Did i understand that right?

@v_d_richards @vkc

it amounts to a lot of scammy practices and being dishonest to their users.

their advertising as being privacy focused is at odds with their business model revolving around ads.

they sell userdata to AI companies for training

afaict this is about ingesting copyrighted material for training their AI, w/o giving attribution to the original creator.

@v_d_richards
And they're founded and run by a homophobe.
@attaboy @vkc
@v_d_richards it's also owned by Brendan Eich, who was pushed out of Firefox leadership for being a right wing homophobe (including financially supporting homophobic political projects). So it was pretty unwelcome out the gates. They have subsequently only continued to disappoint.

@v_d_richards @vkc taken from wikipedia:

"Brendan Eich [...] served as the Mozilla Corporation's chief technical officer before he was appointed chief executive officer, but resigned shortly after his appointment due to pressure over his opposition to same-sex marriage. He subsequently became the cofounder and CEO of Brave Software."

@v_d_richards @vkc theres nothing wrong with brave.
@balasubramanium their CEO is a massive bigot, that alone is enough reason to avoid them
Stop using Brave Browser

Seriously.

The Spacebar
@v_d_richards @vkc the tldr is a load of crypto stuff and a homophobic founder (who also peddled nonsense around Covid).

"Other than the AI"

I think thats enough.

That's right. But when i talk about this on my blog, i want to know all the reasons.

It will be hard for users who are not knee deep in software info, to slowly touch base with alternatives they have never heard of.
I oppose AI in software too and avoid, deactivate it or change the service wherever i can.

But for folks with only little mental ressources, this switching, tinkering, stop using can be too much.

So i try to collect info and bring it into easy to read lists

Brave is the latest project from Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript and also famous for donating money to organizations trying to make same-sex marriage illegal (and saying lots of pretty words about how he’s nice to his gay colleagues without ever actually, like, saying gay people deserve equal rights). It also heavily leans into cryptocurrency shenanigans. (Apparently he was also an anti-masker and COVID truther, because of course he was.)

@v_d_richards in addition to supporting AI, they also do cryptocurrency shit, and it's founded by the guy who got fired from mozilla for being homophobic
