A nearly intact porcini mushroom is not something you see very often. They've usually already eaten by insects or other small animals. Eekhoorntjesbrood (bread for squirrels) is also a delicacy for humans. But in the Netherlands, picking mushrooms is prohibited. #mushrooms #mushroom #autumn #autumnvibes #macrophotography #macro #macrophoto #photography #fediverse
@mamzikorven But in some forests, picking is tolerated. But only for personal use. I read somewhere that it's not allowed to exceed 250 grams.
What!!? Really? All mushrooms, everywhere? Why?
I found this explanation on a Dutch website: "Mushrooms are very important to nature. They provide food for animals and clean up organic matter, such as leaves and dead animals. Moreover, they are part of an indispensable network in the forest. Mushrooms are the fruits of something larger: a network of fungi that connects trees and plants underground. A Wood Wide Web. Moisture and nutrients flow back and forth between trees and fungi through this network. Trees cannot survive without these fungi. That's why we must leave mushrooms alone.”
Well. All that is true, it's just ... there's enough for everyone. But I guess maybe not in the Netherlands.
That's very interesting background info! Good for nature and good for humans too in case those who accidentally pick some poisonous mushrooms.

@Dorine

Very cool! 🙂

And now I'm imagining special prisons in the Netherlands full of people who illegally picked mushrooms. (I hope conditions aren't *too* awful for them! Just awful enough.)

Oh, so that's why I cannot find porcini anywhere in this country!
II found this one, and my husband was disappointed I didn't bring it home. He loves it. But I'm a coward.😊
