@itsfoss I can proudly say that I don't do it 😅
(rip games with anitcheat that purpousefuly disable anticheat support for linux)
@itsfoss face it, Linux isn't a good desktop
@fox @itsfoss because Linux isn’t a desktop. There are however many great desktops for Linux, though I’m sure there’ll be people who won’t like any of them. Some setups, especially the lighter-weight and more specific ones will require more setup, but something that is comparable (even superior, in my opinion) to Windows or Mac, in terms of features, like KDE Plasma, work great out of the box, and are super easy to install.
@791E @itsfoss xfce debian requires the least setup lmao but try anything fancy and it's a nogo
@fox Debian is not a good distro choice for most users IMO.
Ubuntu is better, I prefer NixOS, and I use Proton (via Lutris and Steam) to play several 'Windows-only' games just fine.
@ham_sando Ubuntu is not better, its filled with bullshit. LMDE is better for most users. As for compatability layers, i have the power of vdi, i dont need no stupid compatability layer and most games i play have linux ports anyways.
@fox you say Linux isn't a good desktop, which doesn't fill me with confidence in your choice, it reminds me of how I felt ~15 years ago.
I've used numerous distros, Debian included, and for people coming from Windows with no exposure I just wouldn't recommend it.
Ubuntu was a better experience for me than Debian, but nowadays I prefer NixOS for its declarative configuration and ability to restore to previous configurations via grub.
I do understand the idealistic objections to Ubuntu though.
@ham_sando nixos is nice for advanced users, i met a nixos user once in irl. I use linux more as a server os and for that its supirior to windows, its so supirior that microsoft even runs hyper-v on linux for azure, but as a dektop ive only had problems, some from themes not working and somehow bricking my system, some from software not working properly on linux and then we have nvidia having broken grid drivers for linux client vms. Im just gonna use windows 10 iot enterprise ltsc /s, they will fix all the linux problems by 2036 right? /j
@fox yeah and that's kinda my point, I use Linux at work and on my personal machines, Debian was my first distro and I got bricked numerous times from broken packages, switched to Ubuntu, which sometimes had issues, mainly when I was doing stuff incorrectly, but once I figured out what I was doing wrong I was fine with Ubuntu, and with NixOS my system config is versioned so if I broke anything I can reboot & revert it in the grub menu.
I don't think NixOS is even complicated tbh.
@itsfoss I'm for the cause, but not too proud to admit I'm going off half-cocked on the switch. I don't mind a little jank, but when games hard-crash at random times, well...
@ionlytweetcrap @itsfoss Depends on what you play really. The games I play either perform the same or crash more on Windows than Linux (Oblivion Remastered for example).

@Cambion @ionlytweetcrap @itsfoss

I find proton or lutris/runners on steam deck give me a lot of choice. If a game doesn’t run on Linux/steamos I just don’t buy it

@_XCM @ionlytweetcrap @itsfoss I only use Linux, both a desktop (Manjaro) and Steam Deck. I technically still have an old Windows drive I need to ceremonial overwrite. Just haven't gotten to it yet. I used that in the past for the few games that didn't work yet (or actually, the games did but mods didn't). But I got them working months ago.

Outside of certain anti-cheat in games I don't play anyways, I don't really encounter much issues anymore. Even if not supported it tends to work anyways.

@Cambion @itsfoss I'm getting really inconsistent results. Some games run at the "I can't believe it's not Windows!" level, others crash and require a system restart during loading screens and/or don't run as well.
@itsfoss oh I miss 3 versions of microsoft teams and system UI implemented in there different levels of framework abstraction latest of which includes javascript
@itsfoss I'm dualbooting gta online when i need to, only this, all the other games I play on linux 💪
@itsfoss this is totally true, but I believe users are going for Windows games less than they were a couple of years ago. Linux support for gaming has been improving over the years and I hope it continues improving, so the few that move to Windows don't need to do it anymore.

@itsfoss Meanwhile me on Windows: How do you install OBS???

I wish I was joking at the time

@itsfoss Sadly, the problem is not Linux or their community at all, so their work doesn't really matter... The real problem are the companies who develop those games, support Linux!!
@itsfoss yeah, I've gotta start looking for a more gaming-optimised distro, because Linux Mint ain't cutting it for me.
@el_haych2024 Bazzite and Nobara are good choices to keep in mind.
@itsfoss they do seem quite difficult to set up, and I've heard of some bad experiences with them.
@itsfoss I was considering doing this just to play Skate specifically, as its anti-cheat detects and refuses to work under Wine and VMs, but now that Sonic Rumble has been released and uses an anti-cheat system that officially supports Wine, I've decided to keep my computer 100% Linux, as it has been for the last 5 years.

@itsfoss The Plex transition was practically impossible. I followed the main guide and a more deeper guide on transferring registry to XML.

Sadly most of the metadata was lost and playlists (largely Plex's fault) didn't transition.

So I put my Windows build on a travel pc I had that has the N-Series of processors by intel. I don't think it will ever be more than a media server going forward.

But I did nuke my entire steam library and moved that towards linux, mainly to my steam deck.
