@itsfoss face it, Linux isn't a good desktop
@fox @itsfoss because Linux isn’t a desktop. There are however many great desktops for Linux, though I’m sure there’ll be people who won’t like any of them. Some setups, especially the lighter-weight and more specific ones will require more setup, but something that is comparable (even superior, in my opinion) to Windows or Mac, in terms of features, like KDE Plasma, work great out of the box, and are super easy to install.
@791E @itsfoss xfce debian requires the least setup lmao but try anything fancy and it's a nogo
@fox Debian is not a good distro choice for most users IMO.
Ubuntu is better, I prefer NixOS, and I use Proton (via Lutris and Steam) to play several 'Windows-only' games just fine.
@ham_sando Ubuntu is not better, its filled with bullshit. LMDE is better for most users. As for compatability layers, i have the power of vdi, i dont need no stupid compatability layer and most games i play have linux ports anyways.
@fox you say Linux isn't a good desktop, which doesn't fill me with confidence in your choice, it reminds me of how I felt ~15 years ago.
I've used numerous distros, Debian included, and for people coming from Windows with no exposure I just wouldn't recommend it.
Ubuntu was a better experience for me than Debian, but nowadays I prefer NixOS for its declarative configuration and ability to restore to previous configurations via grub.
I do understand the idealistic objections to Ubuntu though.
@ham_sando nixos is nice for advanced users, i met a nixos user once in irl. I use linux more as a server os and for that its supirior to windows, its so supirior that microsoft even runs hyper-v on linux for azure, but as a dektop ive only had problems, some from themes not working and somehow bricking my system, some from software not working properly on linux and then we have nvidia having broken grid drivers for linux client vms. Im just gonna use windows 10 iot enterprise ltsc /s, they will fix all the linux problems by 2036 right? /j
@fox yeah and that's kinda my point, I use Linux at work and on my personal machines, Debian was my first distro and I got bricked numerous times from broken packages, switched to Ubuntu, which sometimes had issues, mainly when I was doing stuff incorrectly, but once I figured out what I was doing wrong I was fine with Ubuntu, and with NixOS my system config is versioned so if I broke anything I can reboot & revert it in the grub menu.
I don't think NixOS is even complicated tbh.
