Sorry Alan Birch, you were rotten to the core and had to go.

But first we had to get a permit, because in Lithuania certain tree species over a certain size have rights. This involved a long wait for a guy to come, glance at the tree and say: "taip" and then another wait for a document.

At least that gave me plenty of time to plan the difficult deed. The tree was rotten, leaning into the road and in range of the house. I cleared a gap in the driveway to drop it into.

Rigged two lines, a stay secured on an apple tree with a winch to pre-tension and the tractor to pull it over.

Thanks to careful preparation, it went as planned and now I have to do a lot of cleanup because there's a big tree laying in our driveway 😆

Birch processed.

Which was a priority, because that's our driveway and we wouldn't have been able to leave with a tree laying in it.

Next up, throwing the pile of branches in the woodchipper. Then collect the logs and split the larger ones.

The horizon looks too naked now. Two more trees to fell here and then I can start planting new ones.

@yngmar 😢 but it stil looks like there might be a few bits of usable boards in there
@daniel_bohrer Nothing worth throwing on a sawmill, the rot goes through. Maybe a few coasters :)
@yngmar yes, that's what I thought too at first when https://chaos.social/@daniel_bohrer/113528095678455925 :D

Attached: 1 image Can't believe that this stack of birch is already dry… The whole stack has lost about one quarter of its weight since I sawed it up 6 weeks ago, and now all boards measure around 8% moisture, ranging from 5% to 10% in various places. I guess it helped that I sawed them up very thin (about 1.5 cm), and hung the stack up to dry near the shop window :D Sadly some of the boards warped a bit, for which their thinness could be a problem. But no cracking or splitting at all. #woodworking #GRTN

@daniel_bohrer I dunno, spalting just looks like junk to me and the wood is weak 🤷

I need construction lumber, not coasters :)

@yngmar yes, I understand :D Lately I've done more boxmaking and woodturning than construction and have acquired a taste for figured woods ^^
@yngmar you did a core dump. Rotten core dump.
@yngmar oooh! I see some beautiful spalting.
@yngmar That rule sounds like a good way to make sure certain trees get cut down before they grow too big 🙃
