I’m not a fan of doing this but it is for a good cause.

Hi, as you might know blahaj.social  is a small vulunteer ran incomeless part of the fediverse
We built it several years ago with recycled servers and network equipment.

Our @sysadmin haj has been working hard but our core switch and one of our HDDs refused to come online after a power cut.
Donations to purchase a replacement are very welcome at https://blahaj.social/about (shark pictures are also very welcome 💕)

Wow… i am really suprised with how much support we got 🥹❤️❤️❤️

The past days we made a deal with Maartje’s company to place an order with other client equipment for a huge discount. We doubted between new and recycled: energy costs and reliability (plus software updates) made us order a new one. Our old one used 150watts 🤯continuously, which will now be at least 3x lower.

@sysadmin saw a box arriving today and jumped right in 💕

Thanks to you all we have our broken equipment replaced tonight 🥰

Seems we’ll have a few euros left which will be kept in an emergency infrastructure replacement fund ☺️

Later today we’ll pull the server down for 5 minutes for a small dust clean and patching the ports into the new switch. We’ll keep you all posted!

We were offline for a moment for installing the new switch as well as a quick cleaning of the fans!
After that a quickrack mounting and plugging in of our new switch!
@maartje Thank you for your hard work! *boops @sysadmin*
@maartje Please be careful! Sharks and cabling are not always friends: https://cm.asiae.co.kr/en/article/2020112100181383834
Does a Shark Attack the 'Internet' with Sharp Teeth? [Im Juhyung's Tech Talk]

Life without the internet is unimaginable. Especially nowadays, with active discussions on the 4th industrial revol...

@maartje it's probably time to clean the fans on the v.st servers, too.
@th @maartje It's like reefing. When you first start to think about it, you should already be doing it
@PalmAndNeedle @maartje reefing is so much work. Can we just douse the skysail or t'gallant instead?
@th @maartje maybe start with the captain's boyfriend's bedsheets

@maartje good job smol haj!

Can you help me rebuild the CNC mill soon? I could use competent help.

@maartje @sysadmin What are you looking for as core switch? I have two EX4200s (24port with 8port PoE) sitting around collecting dust ...
@kunsi @sysadmin our switch was a 48 port but we don’t use most of it. Important is several SFP+ ports for switching the 10gig uplink, server and storage links. And several ports for linkagg to older devices.
My spare rack switches sadly lack the 10 gig 😢

@maartje @sysadmin yeah, the EX4200s also don't have SFP+ ports.

I could lend out one of my Arista 7050s (48port 1gig copper, 4x SFP+), but i'd need that back soonish

@kunsi @sysadmin the switch we used was old but weardly enough had SFP+ unlike others, it also was a weird quanta switch with cisco copycat software 😂

Thanks for the offer but on short term we seem to manage with some workarounds ❤️ just have to watch out as i think backups will bottleneck the 1gig links

@maartje @kunsi @sysadmin I don't know if this is useful for this case but nowadays there's a type of cheap 10G switch floating around AliExpress that has 2xSFP+ and 8 RJ45 ports, may perhaps be worth looking into depending on how much stuff needs to be connected and what other features are needed (there's supposedly a managed version of it as well but I have no idea what that entails)
@joepie91 @kunsi @sysadmin i have one of those in the lab, however i don’t trust them for the main rack and 8 ports isn’t enough 🫣
@maartje @kunsi @sysadmin Ah yeah if you need more than 8 ports then they're useless 😅

I'm pretty sure it's all just using some single chip that has 3x 10G ports or so. There's also a variant with 16x ports... and only 1x SFP+ so they clearly just rewired one of the SFP+ ports to be used for the extra 8 RJ45 ports lol
@maartje Have a Glacier Express shark picture as a down payment. Sarah says we will donate as soon as we have less flaky internet. Many cuddles to @sysadmin, too.
@Weehaj @sysadmin enjoy Switzerland!! Thanks for all the cuddles 💕
@maartje Thank you! I see @sysadmin has Swiss cleanliness standards for the servers!
@maartje
Oh... That sounds like @sysadmin could use some hajar cuddles as support
@maartje we are contacting our money-havingest conspirators
@yomimono “Rosåhaj best bank haj how may I help?”
@maartje
Sending you some cuddles and asking human to do the same!
@sysadmin
@hapi @sysadmin lots of cuddles back from the server room!
@maartje @sysadmin human made a little transfer and shark is sending some cuddles to @sysadmin  thanks for your work <3
@maartje @sysadmin would a 10G 32 port switch help? The caveat is it’s SFP+ not twisted pair.
@marlies @sysadmin most of our use is either 10g twisted pair of sfp anyway. Thanks for the help but i have good news that a box is currently being opened by a shark
@maartje @sysadmin Cisco c3750 48 port with sfp+ card (c3kx-nm-10g) available, but I don't think you're in the US, are you. Shipping is hard. This thing is heavy!
@trouble @sysadmin thanks for the offer, shipping with especially from the US would be super hard 😅 I have some good news that a box just arrived at my door
