Either AI is a bubble and causes the next Great Depression, or it works and causes the next Great Depression
@Lydie It's quite depressing already.
@Lydie invest now to lose it all or strike it big by pulling out before the bubble pops. Like some giant scammy crypto coin heist. Will the prophecy of the 90s web bubble ring true and. The biggest players come out on top? The lack of profits makes it hard to imagine.

@Lydie

Don't worry. I'll terminate AI before that happens. I'm a..nevermind. 😃

@Lydie

Anyone using the acronym AI is trying to sell you something.

Trust an old guy who has been working with neural nets for 30 years - AI is already here, making the world's rice everywhere there's electrical power. It's that ubiquitous already. The LLMs are interesting, but it's the training which makes all the difference.

@tuban_muzuru @Lydie Are you talking about Zojirushi's "fuzzy logic" embedded in their rice cookers?

@arclight @Lydie

Yes, fuzzy logic is a specific technique within the broader field of AI, particularly associated with expert systems and control systems.

@Lydie really amazing economic system we've set up here!

@Lydie

Fat chance!

Of LLMs working at all, I mean. It's like peddling nuclear energy in 1929.

@angelastella @Lydie LLMs work... in the most technical sense. They really do model language. (The problem is that they aren't marketed for what they are.)
@Lydie it's a win-win for the torment nexus

@Lydie
There's always an upside to a bubble that bursts, it just takes time to get there.

All those GPUs that the techbros spent on will go to nearly zero and people who can actully use them will be able to get them and make something worthwhile.

@Lydie

There's also the distinct possibility (read: "probability") that it causes the worst possible outcome from BOTH

A) It's a bubble (the bubble pops, causing massive damage)

*AND*

b) LLM's (sort of) 'work'... just well enough to MAXIMIZE "how bad things get" once the bubble pops

Many corps are already aware that LLM's will never actually be "good" at anything...
- However, they are (just) 'good enough' to generate some SLOP (as a first pass)

- The corps will then use the existence of LLM 'created' first draft work as a means for devaluing the skilled labor hired to "proof read & 'clean up'" the LLM garbage

- I.E. people will be paid lower wages for 'editing' than they would be for authoring original creative work
