@oathboundfamiliar I had a spam phone call today:

Them (standard scam opener): "I am the energy advisor for your postcode area."

Me (standard response to spam phone calls): "Do feel happy when you wake up in the morning knowing that you're going to be spending all day scamming people?"

So far so BAU. But then:

Them (not the standard response!): "Yes yes" (and drops the call).

Better trained than the ones who waste time arguing with me. But they still could have saved half a second by dropping the call without saying anything at all.

@TimWardCam

Those scammers are living in holiday paradises scamming old people of their money and laughing about it when the victims cry. There was a reporter that got under their skin for a while, documenting them. Realy horrible stuff.

@eq @TimWardCam

The person on the phone might have been someone who is forced to do such "work" like those people in Myanmar.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yr7j18edjo

Myanmar scam centres: Thousands who have been freed are now stuck in camps

The camps are unsanitary, food barely sufficient, and many of those being held are in poor health.

@bergamlaimerin @TimWardCam

No, they don't laugh in your ear after they scammed you out of all your money saying things like "You deserve it!"

@oathboundfamiliar great post but why tf are independent creators asking for donations catching strays here
@caligula9997 @oathboundfamiliar I don't know if the author meant it this way of course, but that seems pretty realistic in how they indeed catch strays for also daring to ask for money when everything asks for money, even if they're probably the only legitimate ask

@oathboundfamiliar not to be obtuse or weird about this because I realize there isn't always a choice here,

but I think selfhosting is an amazing solution to a lot of this (though not everything); whether it's social media (and video platforms), listening to your own music or video collection remotely, making sure your data doesn't get stolen or resold, etc.

it also seems to become easier and easier, and cheaper and cheaper to do so, so I sometimes wonder if it'll become a mainstream thing.

@anthropy @oathboundfamiliar

The problem with self-hosting is that you host your own stuff. If you aren't around to pay the bills, your stuff will be gone and your relatives will not have your posts any more.

@eq well, I understand that it's something to keep in mind, but whether it's a problem depends on a number of things; it assumes that you're hosting in a datacenter rather than at home, and that you don't use some shared account for payments (which you could if it's a concern), and that you're not making any backups to your home in case you aren't hosting at home, for example.

@oathboundfamiliar there's too much adze, needs more axe.
@oathboundfamiliar and thus the only valid teason is to refuse to use said shitty sites and srrvices that do #Enshittification!
@oathboundfamiliar @mutax this should be a monologue read by Ewan McGregor.

and then there are books. Faithful, quiet, exciting, books.

Capitalism.
Oh and by the way I'm not Marxist communist or whatever the RW want to call me.
I just don't want to run my life as a servant of money or slave to the rich

@oathboundfamiliar This enshitification of products makes me so sad.

Bought a Backbone controller. Stopped working after my phone updated to Android 15.

Learned how to code videogames for Android. Google is going to require developer registration for everything.

Got a new laptop at work with Windows 11 after having 10. Microphone on all headphones stopped working.

Meanwhile 5+ year-old things work just fine, but they are usually not supported or they flat out cannot update to new software because it artificially inflates HW requirements. 😭

@oathboundfamiliar To the tune of "Fitter Happier" by Radiohead
@oathboundfamiliar could you send have the source link ?
@oathboundfamiliar when you realize you are the product (not the user), the decision to walk away is much easier.
@oathboundfamiliar summary: enshittification is rife.
@oathboundfamiliar I never see ads on my debian gnu/linux computer running firefox with adblockers or my rooted lineageos phone running cromite

@oathboundfamiliar It's almost funny how most of these problems can be solved by reverting back to piracy like in the 2000s. That would be illegal of course, so please don't!!1!1!cos(0)

@G33KatWork All I'm going to say is that I have exhausted options to get things that are both legal and ethical. Guess which one is more important to me?

@oathboundfamiliar

@dnkboston @G33KatWork @oathboundfamiliar

If companies were genuinely interested in not having their wares pirated, they wouldn't make the mistake of making them so easily accessible via the internet. They could make it easy for people to pay a fair price to get what they want.

But now it's much easier to download and watch everything without ads, if one knows a few very simple tricks.

Best part: though it may be immoral, as long as we (in the US) don't republish copyrighted works, it's not even illegal.

@johnlogic Sorry, I should have clarified my comment about ethics. I think YouTube, Spotify, and any company financed by Len Blavatnik is unethical, and that's before we get to how exploited the artists are. I would much rather be accused of breaking a law than screwing someone already getting screwed.

*Note: I'm not judging the customers of those services; I'm judging those services.

- Find what you need
- Go to the checkout
- "Are you in our system?"
- No
- "Can you give your details so we can add you to our system?"
- No
- "We need your details to email your receipt"
- I want a printed receipt.
- "We can't print sir"
- Then I'll snap a picture of your screen.
- "We can't do that, you need an account."
- Keep the stuff, I'll be shopping somewhere else.
