The sum of all fears

(13 missing because of classic superstition. 4/14/24 missing because “4” sounds like “death” here in Taiwan. 2 missing because the lobby is tall.)

@mwichary and 4 in B4 has another pronunciation?
@rayslava Good question! I hadn’t even noticed. Maybe no one will object to “staying” at B4.
@mwichary @rayslava I was just thinking, watch out for the death basement 😬
@mwichary @rayslava B4 is commonly pronounced B4 in english. Coincidentally it can be a pun for "nagging to death"
@rayslava let's accept it, if someone parks underground at floor 4, they kind of asking for it
@mwichary

@mwichary

my favorite is the elevators which stop at every floor on some days because in some religions it's not ok to push buttons on those days

@winghongchan @dannotdaniel Nice Gorton panel, too.
@mwichary @winghongchan I have no idea what this is 😅
@dannotdaniel @mwichary @winghongchan I tried to search for it and didn't find anything – seriously, what is a Gorton panel?

@mwichary @SemAntiKast @dannotdaniel @winghongchan omg, this is not an article or a blog. It's a *love letter*

@dannotdaniel @mwichary I wish subway elevators which only have two floors would enable this option every day. More than once I've gone into an elevator after a long bike ride, sat there in an exhausted stupor for a minute, and then realized it wasn't moving because I hadn't pushed a button. It should just go!
@jef @dannotdaniel @mwichary Right, the building I work in is only two stories tall, why do I have to push a button, there's only one option!
@Canageek @jef @dannotdaniel Pressing elevator buttons is fun and you’re both on my list now
@mwichary @jef @dannotdaniel If they were fun buttons to push, I'd be fine, but they're really not good feeling buttons to push. The metal always feels weirdly greasy, so I don't want to touch it.
@Canageek @jef @dannotdaniel Now, *this* seems like the right problem to solve.
@Canageek kiddo sometimes doesn't want to press them because he got a static electric shock once. Telling him to hold my hand so that I would get the shock, helps, though I'm not 100% certain it actually works with static discharge 😅
@mwichary @jef @dannotdaniel
@jef @dannotdaniel @mwichary Many metro and commuter train lifts in Stockholm have this feature. Many even press the outside button by themselves if you go near the elevator. Bicycles aren’t allowed in the metro, though, only on commuter trains.
@dannotdaniel @mwichary And the opposite, elevators that don’t stop on any floor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paternoster_lift

@mwichary yeah but you can tap them again to cancel a selection and the close button actually works!

Let me know if you need food recs in taipei :p

@mwichary any dietary restrictions?
@grumpasaurus Nope (well, trying to low carb it all, but that might not be possible in Taiwan)
@mwichary nearest MRT station?

@grumpasaurus Thanks so much for all these!!!
@grumpasaurus Also passing along to friends who will be staying in the area for longer.

@mwichary

If i think of a dish that's low carby I'll let you know lol. But i think roast duck, stinky tofu with pickled cabbage, night market grilled crispy chicken thighs are what i can think of lol. Century egg and tofu.

@mwichary oh. Yakiniku is super popular too
@grumpasaurus I can’t even stand smelling stinky tofu from the distance.
@grumpasaurus I have been informed I have already been here ha
@grumpasaurus @mwichary In Japan it’s normally double-tap to cancel. But in lifts with several panels you might not be able to cancel taps from all other panels.
@mwichary some also consider 17 unlucky ^^

@mwichary

I first thought about an unknown mathematical sequence of numbers...

😂

@mwichary I stayed in a new-build apartment tower in Sydney once. There were no residential floors ending in 4, as it was built with Chinese/Asian investors in mind. I’ve never seen a missing 13th floor in Australia/the UK/Europe, though, and imagined that to be largely an American thing
@mwichary Human stupidity knows no bounds.
@mwichary at that point I'd probably have just switched over to letters rather than numbers 😅
@mwichary In my alma mater, the floor system was a much more complex system of mezzanines and attics. -1, 0, 1, 1, 1a, 7, 2, 3, 4 etc.
@mwichary I wish they didn’t just remember the floors. It seems like a cop-out to still use the “unlucky” ones normally yet number them something else like that suddenly makes it ok all of a sudden.
Fully commit to the bit or don’t do it at all xD.
(Still have service elevators get to those floors though… make use of them for mechanical purposes or something at least).
@mwichary interesting that they do have a B4
@mwichary
Not going down to B4, that's the death basement!
@mwichary surely it's the difference of all fears? :D
@mwichary Others have pointed out that they didn't skip B4, but why did they skip B1? (Another really tall floor?)
@snowfox Might be. I also wonder if people might press B1 expecting 1? Just a speculation. Contrary to America for example, I haven’t seen a universal symbol like asterisk to denote the “exit floor.”
