“I have a great and considerable fear that people will freeze to death in their homes this winter if we do not turn this around quickly.”

‘People will freeze to death’ if heating aid doesn’t come soon

The federal government shutdown means heating aid will not be released Nov. 1, leading to stark worries from those who manage the program.

@molly0xfff I remember Hugo Chavez sending fuel oil to struggling New England state residents when W was president.

That is if people have homes. I fear for myself and my wife as our government tries to abolish rent controls. We will be living under a bridge, if we get lucky.

@molly0xfff Yep, that's exactly what's happening with my brother-in-law and his family. His LIHEAP payments are delayed and now their power is shut off.
@molly0xfff how come the news site for an english speaking audience in light colors, switches to a dark theme and is translate to german after finishing loading? I don't have an option to read the original
@palinor5 doesn't happen for me

@palinor5
I only noticed the switch to dark. When i opened a link within the article, i had the very same experience than you.,
At the right upper corner, there´s a box w/ an American flag next to the word English, it contains a drop down menu for several other languages.

@molly0xfff

@electricfusionQ @molly0xfff I found the flagg inside the burger menu at the top left, at the top right I found the switch for the light/dark theme (sun/moon).
@molly0xfff disclaimer, I am from Germany. The site still switches to a dark theme but all text remains english. The switch happens after loading when touch the screen. Could a be the accessebility tool they are using on their site?
@palinor5
I am experiencing the same thing. The background color depends on the theme you have selected on your phone. The language is more problematic. My browser (Firefox) is set not to translate English, yet the article is translated into Danish.
I can force it back from the left menu at the top; there is a small flag at the bottom for language selection. So I guess it is a "feature" of the website.
