I know that some Mastodians don't appreciate those of us trying to sell our art on this platform. I'm aware of this every time I promote my photo tours, books, and prints. That's why I'm grateful to those of you who boost my posts about it. 😘

@CatherineBabault

I ❤️ people showing and selling their art on this platform!

What do the grinches want? No beauty? Only Doomscrolling?

@Akshay Thanks for your support. We're just trying to make a living and this is a good place to show our work. 🙂
@Akshay you are my new fav person.
@CatherineBabault @evan What? What’s wrong with people. I’ll follow and boost just to balance things a bit 😃

@CatherineBabault

Nobody on the Fediverse should have to see things they don't want to.

- Don't want to see someone's posts? Don't follow them!
- Don't want to see posts of people you don't follow? Read the home feed, not the Fediverse feed!
- Don't want to see boosted posts by someone? Mute them or block them.
- Don't want to see posts on a particular topic? Block those keywords!

Badgering people not to post things you don't like should be the very last option.

@CatherineBabault You're just trying to make an honest living sharing your art and the beauty of the subjects you photograph. I'm not sure why anybody would be upset, at least your not peddling vapourware, quick-rich schemes, fake news or false hopes. Never have I read that one of your beautiful pictures of a grizzly or a landscape could cure my hairloss! #supportartists #photography #BritishColumbia #vancouverisland
@StefanoL Thanks Stefano. I just try to find a balance between showing my photos and also 'marketing' my work.
@CatherineBabault FWIW, I enjoy looking at your photos and I look forward to the day when I can visit Vancouver Island again. Please just carry on doing what you do.

@CatherineBabault really? I have never had anyone complain to me about occasionally posting about my store. I am sorry to hear you have. About once a week I am pleasantly surprised to see someone has stumbled on my profile and boosted my store. I have yet to get even one sale out of it (been here for 3 years so what are yall waiting for? 😂 ) but its fun here and I dont do it for the money, it keeps me busy and makes me smile.

ok I lied. the money would be AWESOME!
#crafts #fedigiftshop

@Crystal_Fish_Caves No one complained directly to me but I have seen people complain about it on Mastodon. They won't stop me from trying to sell my work here.

My post was more about acknowledging and thanking the people who boosts my ''sale posts'' than the sad complainers.

Wishing you lots of sales! 😀

@CatherineBabault

You can block them. Mastodon is not a legislature and the representative of "do it my way" does not have to be given the floor. I encourage people blocking me because I dont use CW content warning, the majority of my posts are triggering.

Blocking, muting, are a-ok muting a convo is fine. Mastodon is the first major party at a party school. Not everyone is to taste. You can change your mind later.
("Maybe I will.hang out with table seven")

Kept safe from real jerks by mods.

@CatherineBabault I’m in love with the foggy forest pic on your pinned post. It’s magical! 😍
@farah Thank you so much. 😊
@CatherineBabault I truly enjoy seeing people's art here, and I love the fact that there is no middleman or algorithm between the people who see it and the people who make it. I've bought so many lovely little gifts for people directly from actual human beings because of the Fedi. We need more of this!

@arisummerland Thanks Ari! We need more people like you. 😊

Oh, and long live the Unicorns!

@CatherineBabault the thing that I find distasteful is folks who use a bot to post their marketing messages like 10x a day, and even then, I'd have no reason to complain to them. I just unfollow or mute.

@CatherineBabault

I want more people to try and sell their art here. Even if I can't afford it, it is nice to see.

@csstrowbridge @CatherineBabault

Indeed and we can boost their work so hopefully others who can afford to make a purchase will so.

@CatherineBabault
I would like to see more of these here.

With no AI deciding what is going to be presented to me, I feel I am on control if I want more of this and less of that.

@CatherineBabault

What fools are these who don't appreciate artists sharing and selling their work on Mastodon!!!
Trolls I am guessing.
Please do not hesitate to offer your work on Fediverse.

The idea of a Fediverse without art and artists (including writers, and crafts people) offering up their work is unimaginable--what a dreary and depressing site this would be.

We need to support artists of all types.

@SnowyCA Some people with a regular pay cheque just do not understand what it's like to be self-employed. They are annoyed when we promote our work in order to generate income. Social media is a cheaper alternative to market our work than a regular ad in the media.

@CatherineBabault

Though I am not an artist at one time I was self employed so I understand the stress of never having the security of a steady income.
Traditional advertising is *expensive* and truly eats away at one's profit margin, and let's face it, artists never are paid well.

Ignore the grumpy folk, we will support you and other artists as best we are able.

@SnowyCA @CatherineBabault

Yep. Agree with everything Snow said. (I’m also self employed.)
Art and artists make the Fediverse an enjoyable place to be, and promoting yourself isn’t spamming. We all recognize spam, and that’s never something you do, Catherine. So keep on being yourself. It’s always a pleasure to see and share your posts.

@KimberlyN @CatherineBabault

Hear, here!!
Spamming is intruding in replies and/or firing off posts every few seconds, and as far as I'm concerned I would prefer to see you post more often...once a day isn't often enough, you're missing ...🤔 ...how many time zones across this country?

@SnowyCA @KimberlyN @CatherineBabault an idea: when something is impkrtant I will post it and make a note to come back and boost it, myself, for the west coast :-)

@deborahh
I've tried that but often I have trouble finding it again--I want folders for bookmarks!

@KimberlyN @CatherineBabault

@CatherineBabault you are bringing your own genuine content here and sharing it.

Yes, there’s an implicit marketing element that we see from any creator here but what you post more than earns its way in the social contract of bringing awareness to the environment and wildlife of Vancouver Island to many who wouldn’t otherwise see it.

I especially appreciate that you always endeavour to tell the story of your pictures in the Alt-Text.

@SnowyCA

@AlsoPaisleyCat
I have so much fun with the AltText sometimes, describing the photo but also adding some fun stuff. It helps me improve my writing skills in English (my second language) too.

@SnowyCA

@CatherineBabault
I noticed on your website that you offer your tours in French as well as English!

There is quite a significant francophone community here on Mastodon - in France, Quebec even Ontario.

I would encourage you to duplicate some of your posts in French with French Alt-Text, and provide a French language pinned Introduction post. You would broaden your reach and perhaps convince some people to make the trip.

@SnowyCA

@CatherineBabault Do people actually give you flack about it?

@Methylcobalamin Not directly but I have seen posts from people complaining about it and that made me a bit self-conscious, although they won't stop me from promoting my work.

My post was more about acknowledging and thanking the people who boost my promotional posts. I am grateful to them.

@CatherineBabault There are types of posts I don't care for. I just scroll past them or mute the authors. What is wrong with people?

@CatherineBabault

I love seeing your work. Your photos make me miss the island even more, but I wouldn’t want you to stop posting here! One of the best things about Mastodon is the art that people share, and because of this environment, I know more about you and what you do. 🫶

@CatherineBabault Please promote all you want. The loud minority is a minority after all.
@CatherineBabault
It's a continuum from one-person, occasionally to full exploitative, fire-hydrant commercial capitalism. I guess some Mastodians are absolutist, for the fear of a creeping threshold of what's acceptable. I'm OK with personal & occasional but I came here to get away from much more than that.
