Even if you’re celebrating the government ordering teachers back to work, this move by the Alberta government is a serious assault on Canadian’s protected charter rights.
Expect more to follow.
//Section 33 can only be used to override sections 2, and 7–15. Those cover the “fundamental,” “legal” and “equality” rights.
Those sections include some of the Charter's key principles, such as the:
- freedom of expression
- freedom of religion
- freedom of association
- protection against unreasonable search and seizure
- right to legal counsel and habeas corpus
- protection against cruel and unusual punishment
- protection from discrimination by the government//
