On October 23 1956 the #HungarianRevolution ignited

It lasted 15 days

It was crushed by #Soviet Tanks

On the anniversary Thursday, there were protests against #Orban

Peter Lakits, holding a sign reading "Russians Go Home":

“One thing we have learned from #history is that we have learned nothing from history. Sometimes the tanks that crushed #freedom in #Budapest are the very same ones that are now crushing freedom in #Ukraine"

#Magyarország #Hungary #Russia #Europe

@benroyce That's a brilliant line: “One thing we have learned from history is that we have learned nothing from history."

@bodhipaksa

it must be an especially sour feeling in #Hungary

the article i linked to says there were protests against #Orban on the anniversary of the #HungarianRevolution on Thursday- but also rallies in support of Orban

how does a human being get like that?

on the anniversary of a defining national moment of brave desperate defiance of #imperialism... to mark that by kissing the boot of that very same imperialism (#USSR/ #Russia)

so much stupidity and evil in this world

@benroyce @bodhipaksa There are always people who believe in their heart of hearts that no matter what the cost to anyone else, THEY should be on the top of at least their little local piece of the heap.

Sometimes I despair at this world. We humans are terrible.

@zakalwe @bodhipaksa

but that's the stupid part

of course for the corrupt like Orban there are benefits of money and power, that's the evil part, and you are correct

but for Orban's supporters there is only worse. this is obvious. and yet... what kind of people are we dealing with who are this dumb?

@benroyce @bodhipaksa Exactly. So many people are willing to act against their actual best interest. And half the time, it's because they don't care, as long as it's even worse for somebody they hate.

There's a joke about an old Polish man who finds a lamp with a genie in it. The genie offers him the usual three wishes for freeing it from its imprisonment.
"For my first wish," the old man says, "I want Genghis Khan and his Golden Horde to come and sack Cracow."
"Your own country?" The genie asks. "Very well." And the Golden Horde come marching, and they sack Cracow, and then they turn around and go home.
For his second wish, the Pole asks for the Golden Horde to come and sack Łódź. So the Horde come and sack Łódź, and then they go home. The third wish goes much the same, with Bialystock the victim this time.

"My service to you is done," the genie declares. "But before I go, please, I must know: Why did you wish to have the Golden Horde come three times and invade your own country?"

The old Pole smiles.
"They marched across the
entire width of Russia, six times," he replies.

@zakalwe
I don’t get it. That joke is too post-modern for me. 🙁

@bodhipaksa @benroyce

@Su_G @zakalwe @bodhipaksa the joke is he doesn't care if he hurts Poland, as long as Russia is hurt as well

@benroyce
Ah! Now I get it. Thank you for explaining it to me… I would never have understood it otherwise! I guess I am too simply-structured… so I’m glad I asked for help - & thank you again for giving it. 😐

@zakalwe @bodhipaksa

@Su_G @zakalwe @bodhipaksa

there's two types of people in the world

those who want everyone to do better

normal. moral. well-intentioned

not simple

then there are those who want others to suffer and have no problem suffering themselves to achieve that

you don't have to feel it. just conceptualize it. then many problems in the world "make sense"

@benroyce
Masochists?
@Su_G a masochist desires pain. these are morons. they want to hurt someone else but only hurt themselves
@benroyce Seems the human race just can’t break the cycle.
Been seeing the rise & fall of insane individuals since ancient Greece.
Right now we’re dealing w another
Nero.
@benroyce
Also in 1956 Russian Artillery shelled Budapest indiscriminately killing civilians, just like right now in Ukraine.
@benroyce I wish them well but stay safe

@benroyce
The footage is awesome: so many people! Thanks so much for posting this, have watched many times. But the irony of this statement about the same tanks is a killer: “Peter Lakits…

“One thing we have learned from #history is that we have learned nothing from history. Sometimes the tanks that crushed #freedom in #Budapest are the very same ones that are now crushing freedom in #Ukraine"
The actual same physical tanks!! 😐

@Su_G well maybe the same tanks sometime in 2023/24

all those relics are emptied out of storage now, in the bottom of a Ukrainian swamp or blown to bits

@benroyce
… or with Ukrainian farmers… 😁
@benroyce thats bs, its eu and us money thats crushing freedom in ukraine. Profiteering scoundrels

@oZebre

oh hi vatnik

so, just to blow your mind, i know this hasn't occurred to you, so i need you to concentrate real hard now on the far distant edges of your limited cranial capacity here:

russia invaded ukraine

🤯

i know. crazy, far out, stuff. just really twists your entire perspective. right, moron?

a teensy tiny detail that might matter to someone who is trying to be honest, and not trying to be a lying piece of shit

@benroyce I won't dignify you with a proper response. Study geopolitics. Or keep following the warmongers, arming ourselves to the teeth

@oZebre

I don't think you understand dignity nor how to write a proper response. The Ukrainian people are facing genocide at the hands of ethnofasicst imperialism and you believe really stupid Kremlin lies

Am I not being not being dignified? Correct. Because you don't deserve respect. Disrespect is the proper response to your walnut sized cranium "thoughts," you fucking vatnik turd. Go kiss Putin's ass on Twitter where morons like you are legion. No one wants your ignorance here
