662: Just Break the Law
https://atp.fm/662

Finally, we have all taken a trip together to Mount Hood.

@atpfm lmao damn I got excited you guys actually took a trip together
@atpfm you should do a shirt with the T568A logo on front and the T568B logo on back and call it the Crossover Shirt
@atpfm Looks like a Severance ORTBO
@atpfm I hope the weekly store updates include stats on which of the two Ethernet wiring standards are winning in the popular vote

@atpfm @marcoarment @siracusa I was so confused with the vest discussion until a good bit in, it was clarified that this is something worn *over* your other clothes.

The common way* the various items of clothing are discussed in Ireland (& [south] UK) is:

- Vest: an undergarment worn on your torso under T-shirt or shirt
- Waistcoat: the third part of a 3-piece suit between shirt and suit jacket
- Body Warmer: outer jacket like garment without sleeves

*at least the parts I am familiar with

@illustro hmm, smith and sniff had a whole bit on gilets vs non-gilet vests. But maybe they used the term “body warmer” not vest. @atpfm @marcoarment @siracusa

@rconti @atpfm @marcoarment @siracusa I have not heard of this podcast. I will investigate it.

If they are from the UK (which they appear to be due to selling in £) I would be surprised if they used vest to describe this piece of clothing, if their audience is primarily in the British English speaking world.

I've not heard the term gilet, however my expectation is that this is the (original?) French name for this garment (as that is the only way my brain wants to pronounce the word).

@rconti I found the episode, "body warmer" and gilet are the two terms they use: https://podscan.fm/podcasts/smith-and-sniff/episodes/the-dj-and-the-lion
The DJ and the lion - Smith and Sniff - Podcast Episode - Podscan.fm

Listen to The DJ and the lion from Smith and Sniff. Jonny has had two celebrity encounters at the Goodwood Revival. Also in this episode, gilet season, a campsite error, a VW van parade, an update on cl...

@illustro right- I think they’re using gilet somewhat jokingly, which is why I also thought body warmer was just slang for vest- not realizing it’s not a term there. (I consume entirely too much British mostly-motoring content, and have a British father in law)
@atpfm @siracusa the quarter zip is a staple of my wardrobe, and are the perfect jumper for autumn/winter on this side of the pond and I have worn them every year since my college years
@atpfm Casey out here just absolutely majestic!
@atpfm @siracusa I totally would have tried Claude Code or something in the terminal to see if it could do the image task.
@atpfm in principle I get why @siracusa thinks the quarter zip is useless, but in practice I love it. A quarter zip without the zip either had to have a tall turtleneck-ish neck, or be crew cut, which fits totally differently on the torso than a quarter zip.
And beyond that, we have full on (thicker) pullover sweaters, or hoodies, or full-zip jackets.
Basically: while the zip doesn’t do much on its own, it allows for a garment that fits totally differently from the other options.
@atpfm You've heard of "Three Wolf Moon." I now present to you "Three Nerd Lake."
@atpfm it’s right there in the name, In-VEST-ers

@atpfm I'm running ethernet cable in my work's new office space this week so the ATP T568B shirt is probably the quickest purchase I've made after listening to an episode.

I purchased the correct version of the shirt, of course. 😂

@atpfm @atpfm @siracusa You should have used Claude Code CLI to do the renaming stuff. "Resize the png files in this directory. Use imagemagik cli. Save the resized images in the same directory and add a resized to the end of the file name."
@anirudhc Like I said, I know a dozen other ways I could have done it, but I wanted to try using Shortcuts.
@atpfm “professional soccer is about ready to takeoff in the US“ is the sports world version of “this is the year of desktop Linux”
@atpfm When do we get an ATP-branded Patagonia-style vest? If the vest propaganda isn’t working, I’m sure the vest lobbyists will come for you. 🤣
@atpfm the Vision Pro “ghosts” are internal reflections in the pancake lenses. Supposedly Apple’s lenses suffer more than the Quests pancake lenses. They are more noticeable in high contrast scenes. Using a brighter environment (as opposed to using dark Jupiter or the theater) will reduce the glare.
@atpfm @siracusa why on earth would they make buying the charger more difficult than it needs to be???
@atpfm @siracusa On Windows, there’s an amazing tool called Process Monitor (from Sysinternals; written by the legend @markrussinovich ) that lets you trace every file access and instantly see which process deleted or touched a file. Super handy for catching “magic” file disappearances. I really miss having such a tool for macOS. Though, on macOS similar options include fs_usage, opensnoop, or GUI tools like FSMonitor — not quite as polished as ProcMon, but they should get the job done.
@atpfm @siracusa I've been experiencing the same Shortcuts bug for about the past year. I have a Shortcut that converts a PDF into images, then rearranges the images to create a new PDF. Every month I run it, rename the new PDF in Finder, and upload it to the Google Drive website. Sometime later, it just disappears from Finder, and I have to redownload it from Google Drive. Thought I was going mad.

@atpfm feedback for overtime:

1) MLS deal is global (MLS season pass is available to purchase in Australia through Apple TV+, some matches stream live)

2) to see an example of existing tie-ins in other Apple service apps, scroll to the bottom of your Apple TV app. You can see e.g. one of the Severance stars in a Fitness+ workout, map locations of significant venues in Palm Royale, etc. it's pretty flimsy but it's there. Fun one would it be for live timing track overlay in Apple Maps.

@karanj @atpfm Interest in watching football is low in the US, but there is one thing there might be less interest in: watching US football from the rest of the world.
@atpfm
@siracusa What are the inode numbers of the files disappearing? Can you use something like lsof to see what process is acting on them?
@atpfm
@siracusa is the sizing correct for the quarter zip? A 40/42 chest is usually a medium or so… or is this just American sizing? I’m in the UK and don’t really want to order an XS and find it’s tiny…
@chrispoole @siracusa Probably best to reach out to Cotton Bureau directly to double-check, but that *should* be right?
@caseyliss @siracusa Thank your Sir, I will do that. I’m just used to a medium being around a 40, 42…
@chrispoole This sounds like a question for @cottonbureau!
@siracusa @cottonbureau 🫡 Ack. I’m on it. (++ @caseyliss)
@chrispoole @siracusa @caseyliss Hey, Chris. Can confirm, those numbers are correct. For reference, I (Nate) wear a men’s large. The quarter zip fits me comfortably at that size, but I could drop down to a medium if I wanted it a little tighter. It’s a little bit drapey under the arms and wide in the shoulders compared to a similarly-sized t-shirt.
