I’ve just read a BRUTAL #roast on #Omarchy. I guess I’m staying FAR away from it lol.

Lowlights:
🙁 Pre-installs a lot of proprietary garbage
🙁 Firewall did not run in one version
🙁 Unholy mess of Bash scripts, without --help flag
🙁 No man pages
🙁 No hibernation
🙁 Promotes a fake e-mail provider that isn't compatible with real e-mail

Note sure how accurate this is (I didn’t install Omarchy) but if even the half of it is true, it’s bad.

@Wuzzy There's a lot to agree with in that #omarchy roast.

There's also a UX detail I like in the 3.1 release.

On macOS it's nice that you can use Cmd-C/V for copy/paste whether you are in the terminal or a browser. Most Linux distros require Control+Shift+C/V in the terminal.

I wrote about how this can be solved on Linux with programmable keyboards:

https://mark.stosberg.com/universal-copy-paste/

Omarchy solved it by binding Super-C/V to Ctrl+Insert & Shift+Insert-- These are widely supported for copy/paste.

Progress towards universal Copy/Paste shortcuts on Linux

On Linux, Control-C and Control-V don't work for copying and pasting in terminals. The Control modifier is used for its original purpose of inserting control codes. Instead, terminal apps require an extra Shift modifier, like Control+Shift+C. But what if there were hidden shortcut combos for copy and paste

@Wuzzy I agree with the points you mention. I do think the issue is about perspective. It’s obviously not for leftists who believe in open source culture. It’s for Mac users who feel stuck. DHH is giving them a turnkey solution to lure them away. That’s just what it is.

@Wuzzy regarding the pre-installed proprietary software, I feel it's not a valid criticism since:
1. It says by definition it's an opinionated distro.
2. It's meant for developers who want to have a quick setup their machine. Most of the installed software is what they will have to install in any case for any modern software engineer.

Disclaimer: I haven't installed or used omarchy personally. Just sharing my views from what I read and saw on YouTube
